MLS Makes Historic Lionel Messi Announcement

Inter Miami CF is finally back in the win column in MLS play, and Wednesday night's 4-2 victory over CF Montreal helped write Lionel Messi's name further into the MLS history books.

Messi and strike partner Luis Suarez both scored two goals in the home win at Chase Stadium, and the former FC Barcelona teammates each recorded one assist for the other.

No combination was more brilliant than their linkup for the final goal. Suarez played a give-and-go with Messi at the edge of the Montreal penalty area, leaving the Argentina forward one-on-one to loft the ball delicately over the opposing goalkeeper.

Messi's two goals and one assist in the match were enough to secure the three points for Inter Miami, who improved to sixth in the Eastern Conference on 26 points (seven wins, five draws) despite playing one less game than the five teams above the Herons in the standings.

The captain now has 29 goals and 21 assists for Inter Miami in regular-season MLS play, eclipsing a major milestone for the first time in club history.

"Lionel Messi became the first player in club history to produce 50 goal contributions (29 goals, 21 assists) in regular season play, doing so in just his 37th game," announced the MLS public relations account after the match on Wednesday.

Messi has recorded 11 of his 50 goal contributions during the 2025 season, with eight goals and five assists in league play. His brilliant free kick in last Saturday's match against the Philadelphia Union was named Goal of the Matchday and moved him into third place all-time with 67 career free kick goals.

Though he is already Inter Miami's all-time leading scorer, his overall total of 47 goals in 58 appearances in all competitions is still relatively small by his standards. Messi scored 672 goals and provided 303 assists for FC Barcelona in 778 matches.
