Real Madrid captain Nacho Fernandez has fuelled rumours he could stay at the club next season.

The veteran defender has looked set to end his  23-year link with the club next month after reportedly opting against a contract extension.

With his contract running down in the Spanish capital, the expectation over his next move indicated his final game would be the UEFA Champions League final on June 1.

Despite a firm update over Toni Kroos’ future, with the German star retiring after Euro 2024, Nacho is less clear.

Carlo Ancelotti confirmed no decision has been made and the centre back will be given the time to assess his options in the coming weeks.

Ancelotti’s comments indicate the ongoing chance of a renewal and Nacho’s pre-final interview with UEFA, via Diario AS, hints at the situation being flexible.

“I’ve been here all my life and for me, Real Madrid is very special”, he said.

“Even if I didn’t wear the armband, I have always felt like a very important player in the team.”

Nacho could be included in Spain’s squad for Euro 2024, despite missing the last three panels, which might delay a club decision.
