Arsenal wrapped up their deadline day business with the loan signing of Ecuador international Piero Hincapié from Bayer Leverkusen. The 23-year-old defender’s arrival was anticipated and Arsenal got the deal done on transfer deadline day. Hincapié joins on a season-long deal and brings with him Bundesliga title-winning experience, having played a key role in Leverkusen’s triumph during the 2023/24 campaign.

Hincapié has made over 100 appearances for the German side since signing in 2021 and is already well established at international level. With 46 caps for Ecuador, he has featured in the 2022 World Cup as well as Copa America tournaments in 2021 and 2024. His development began in his homeland with Independiente del Valle, where he captained the under-17s and lifted the U20 Copa Libertadores before moving to Argentina in 2020 to play for Talleres.

Arsenal’s Sporting Director delighted with capture

Sporting Director Andrea Berta could not hide his satisfaction at bringing in the defender. Speaking to arsenal.com, he said: “We are delighted to have completed the loan signing for the season of Piero Hincapié. At only 23, Piero already has significant experience, both in the Bundesliga and at international level. He is an intelligent defender with real strength and versatility. His performances in recent years for both club and country have been of a consistent high quality, and we are confident Piero will continue to grow this season and be an important player for us.”

Arteta welcomes defensive reinforcement

Mikel Arteta also expressed his excitement at the signing. “We are so pleased to welcome Piero Hincapié to the club. Piero has a real physical presence, with his versatility and tactical flexibility giving us strong added defensive options. He is a big character, with a very good combination of both youth and maturity. He will make our squad stronger and more competitive as we continue into this season. We welcome Piero and his family to Arsenal.”

Hincapié will wear the number 5 shirt and is set to link up with his new teammates after returning from international duty with Ecuador. The transfer remains subject to the completion of regulatory processes.
