Surprisingly, today is transfer deadline day, just of a different kind. Today is the final day for teams to make signings ahead of the group stage of the Club World Cup with one major club facing a big day. Chelsea have been linked with a number of top players recently but new reports emerging indicate that they could miss out on all of them, in what would be a crushing blow to fan morale.

The Athletic and Simon Johnson have been reporting on the deals involving the Blues and star players Mike Maignan, Nico Williams, and Hugo Ekitike with negative updates being given on each story. The most disappointing will likely be the pursuit of veteran goalkeeper Maignan.

According to the latest information, there is still a gap in valuations between the two parties. The English side are only willing to offer a meagre £12.6 million for the 29-year-old French international and could be about to lose out on a veteran shot-stopper due to their own stubbornness.

The deal is allegedly not happening for a number of reasons, likely due to a steep price tag as well as his high wages. Some could argue that missing out on all three would indicate a real lack of ambition on the side of the Conference League winners to improve and kick on, instead hoping to find the next diamond in the rough by buying cheap and young for another summer.
