Manchester United are currently on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League (at the time of writing). Although Man Utd’s form has fluctuated in recent years, the Red Devils remain one of the giants of European soccer alongside mighty Real Madrid. There have been classic encounters between Man United and Real Madrid in the European Cup/Champions League. These are a few of the more memorable Manchester United vs. Real Madrid games played between those teams.

1968 European Cup

In the 1968 European Cup semi-finals, it was Manchester United vs Real Madrid. In the first leg of this fixture, United had won a narrow victory at Old Trafford. 1–0 was the scoreline there, and so the tie was still wide open in the return leg at the Bernabeu.

In the first half, a rampant Madrid team hit the crossbar when a corner kick was whipped in from the right. A header sent the ball flying toward Utd’s goal, but it bounced off the crossbar. From another set-piece, a free kick from the right side of Utd’s box, the ball was whipped in and then headed home at the right post by Pirri.

Madrid had a one-goal lead in the match, and the overall aggregate score was level. In the few minutes before halftime, they extended their lead when one of Utd’s players effectively set up Gento clear on goal to score. Utd soon bounced back when a high ball was played into Madrid’s penalty box, and as the ball fell to Zoco, the midfielder put the ball into the back of his team’s net.

The frantic goal glut was not over. Minutes before halftime, a cross was whipped in from the left side of Utd’s box, and a long-distance strike was deflected to Amaro, who struck the ball from just within the box. The ball flew in at the top left of Utd’s goal to make it Madrid 3  Man Utd 1 at halftime.

Utd needed one goal in the second to make it through on away goals. Soon after the interval, a half volley from distance flew over Madrid’s bar. Charlton shot from a distance, and the ball flew past the right side of Madrid’s goal by a few inches. Madrid also went for a goal when Amaro struck from outside the box, with the ball flying just over the crossbar.

Then the vital Utd goal came when a free kick was given to Utd, some way out from Madrid’s box. The free kick was played into the box and then headed high back into the air by one of Utd’s players. The ball fell to Sadler, just a few feet from Madrid’s goal, who scored from close range. Five minutes later, the score was 3–3 when Foulkes’s low strike breached the Madrid net.

As the game finished 3–3, it was a victory for the Red Devils in this Manchester United vs. Real Madrid encounter. The score ensured a 4–3 aggregate victory and a place in the final. It had been a thrilling game and a great win for Man Utd.

2000 Champions League

In the 2000 Champions League, Utd were champions of Europe when they came up against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. On their trip to Spain, the match ended 0–0. As such, Utd had to win the second, while Madrid could go through with a score draw.

In the first half, Real Madrid took the lead when Keane put the ball into the back of United’s net. In the second, they pressed for the equalizer, but then Madrid broke from their box. The ball was played to Raul, who ran into Utd’s penalty box. From just within it, the ball was curled past Utd’s keeper to make it Madrid 2 - Utd 0. When Raul slotted the ball into an open net to make it three, the game was all but over.

Later in the half, Utd did pull one back. A great run from Beckham was followed by a precise strike from just within the penalty box, which beat the Madrid keeper. Now, the Utd fans could cheer a goal, and they would cheer another when Utd were given a penalty late on in the game. That penalty was duly converted to make it Real Madrid 3  Man  Utd 2. It was too little too late, and as that remained the final scoreline, the Spanish giants went through.

2003 Champions League

In the quarter-finals of the Champions League, Utd came up against a star-studded Madrid team. Ronaldo, Zidane, and co. won the first game 3–1. Utd’s away goal kept the fixture alive in the return match.

When Ronaldo scored early in the first half, Madrid also had an away goal. Van Nistelrooy equalized for Utd later in the first half. The goal was effectively a tap-in into an open net from just a few feet out.

In the second half, Ronaldo scored another goal. The ball was passed to the Brazilian from the left side of the box, who slotted home from close range. After Utd equalized, a third Ronaldo goal from 25 yards completed a great hat-trick to make the score 3–2.

Ronaldo came off, and Beckham came on. Utd pressed forward to grab the required goals to make it through. When they were given a free-kick just outside the Madrid box, Beckham curled one in over their wall to equalize. A scrambled fourth goal made it 4–3 to Man Utd. They had won the game, but Real Madrid still went through to the quarter-finals after this classic match.
