Three Serie A giants look to sign Harry Maguire

Harry Maguire has had a rollercoaster ride since joining Manchester United.

Arriving from Leicester in the summer of 2019, Maguire joined for a fee of £80 million.

This broke the world record transfer fee for a defender, £5 million more than the previous marker set by Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk 19 months prior.

After Ashley Young’s move from United to Inter Milan, Maguire was made United captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just five months into his spell at the club.

However, a mixture of poor form and United’s struggles on the pitch saw Maguire subject to plenty of media criticism.

He was eventually stripped of United captaincy by Erik ten Hag in July 2023 but has since seen an improvement on the pitch.

Most notably, he scored the winning goal in a 5-4 win over Olympique Lyonnais in last season’s UEFA Europa League quarter-final.

His 121st minute second leg strike saw United confirm a place in the semi-finals by virtue of a 7-6 aggregate victory.

With Ruben Amorim sacked and replaced by Michael Carrick on an interim basis, no player’s future is secure.

We have already seen plenty of players exit the club either on a loan deal or permanent basis, whether this has been Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony or Andre Onana.

With Maguire in the twilight of his career, United could look to start afresh.

Maguire has been linked with a move away, with several Serie A clubs reported to be keen on his services.

Inter Milan, Napoli and Fiorentina are the biggest names liked with a move for the former Hull City defender.

With the success of former teammate Chris Smalling at AS Roma, Maguire could be tempted by a move to Italy and a fresh start.
