Tottenham missed a trick by not landing Serie A winger on deadline day – Opinion

Tottenham Hotspur spent the entire summer transfer window looking to add some firepower to the roster, and while the chiefs at Hotspur Way had to pivot from transfers multiple times, the Lilywhites did end up adding some floor-raising players to their roster, with the latest of them being Kolo Muani on a loan deal from PSG on deadline day. But the North Londoners could have easily added another marquee forward in the final hours of the summer transfer window in Ademola Lookman.

Daniel Levy apparently came very close to pulling off a deadline day transfer that had the capacity to get this roster to the next level, with reports suggesting that the former Everton star ended up being a priority target for Thomas Frank’s side glinting in the final hours of the window. But while the Lilywhites pushed and pushed to make this one happen, talks stalled and the deal slipped away.

Why Lookman was a perfect fit for Tottenham under Frank

If we look at the current crop of players in Europe, there are a few players who you’d watch and term as tailor-made for the new direction that Tottenham want to go towards under Thomas Frank, and Lookman is one of those. He has not only proven his credentials in the Premier League but also is a versatile player who has the capacity to play across the front three. If signed, he’d have brought a sense of directness that Tottenham don’t have at the moment following Spurs’ Son’s departure.

And then given the fact that he contributed towards 27 goals in the last season shows how effective he has become during his stint in Serie A, where we are watching him put in some clinical finishing alongside intelligent movements for Atalanta.

For Frank, he has proven to be an ideal weapon, given he has that capacity to play on the channel and cut inside whilst pressing relentlessly and still being able to deliver in the final third.

And given that Dominic Solanke has been sidelined right now and Richarlison has been carrying the load, Lookman could have been someone who’d have added that quality and depth in multiple positions and sequences (which would have been much more than what Muani will bring to N17).

Is depth still a concern in Thomas Frank’s attack?

We saw how the North Londoners did ensure that they added Randal Kolo Muani to the offensive roster on deadline day, while the likes of Xavi Simons, Wilson Odobert and Brennan Johnson bring a sense of another dimension to the attacking sequences at N17, but there is a belief among a section of Lilywhites supporters that depth still remains a concern for Tottenham given how the likes of James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski and Solanke are nursing injuries, which leaves Frank to shuffle his options (which in a way feels very familiar to all the injury chaos in the last season).

And if Tottenham could have signed Lookman, it would have eased that pressure. Instead, Thomas Frank will now head into the autumn with a thinner front line than he would have liked…

All eyes on January for Lookman?

Now with the conclusion of the summer transfer window, Tottenham have the chance to revisit a possible move for Lookman when the winter transfer window comes around, given that the Nigerian international failed a move to Bayern Munich as well and could end up staying with his current employers for another half of the season.

And given the fact that he ticks every box in terms of what Frank wants in his roster, making him quite an attractive option for Tottenham to consider. But that being said, Atalanta will not make it easy, given how Levy has already shown his hand by pushing late in the summer.

But for now, Tottenham missed out on an intriguing prospect, and Frank will have to manage with what he has. But the pursuit of Lookman also tells us that Tottenham want to add more firepower and flexibility to the squad, and that could come in terms of new faces when winter comes around.
