West Ham United had a less-than-impressive 2024/25 season, finishing in 14th place with unappealing performances on the pitch. They will look to push up the table in this coming campaign, and if they can recruit well, this is more than possible given Graham Potter’s track record at Brighton and Hove Albion. West Ham have entered talks with Callum Wilson as a potential incoming to help bolster their frontline and hopefully bring some goals.

Discussions Rely on Length of Contract

Dharmesh Sheth, of Sky Sports Football, has revealed that West Ham are in talks with Wilson’s representatives over a potential move. Discussions are reportedly based around the length of the contract, with the 33-year-old struggling to stay fit in seasons gone. The striker has already begun his pathway into a new career, working as a pundit for DAZN at the FIFA Club World Cup this summer.

The Hammers would not pay any actual transfer fee, as Wilson’s contract at Newcastle United expired at the end of the 2024/25 season. However, this could inflate his wage demands, especially as a seasoned Premier League footballer.

Can Callum Wilson End the West Ham United Striker Curse?

West Ham have had struggles with new striker signings since the 2010s, but have dramatically failed to replace Marko Arnautovic, who departed in 2019. With Sebastien Haller (£45 million) and Gianluca Scamacca (£30 million) both flopping, Michail Antonio has had to carry the burden of leading the line by himself, with some help from winger Jarrod Bowen.

On the one hand, Wilson could be the perfect answer to this. He has 88 top-flight goals, is Newcastle’s second top-scorer in the Premier League, and scored 18 in the division three years ago. To have someone experienced, with a “proven” record, could provide a helpful amount of goals across the season, much like Danny Welbeck did under Potter at Brighton.

However, Wilson’s injury record is more than concerning. They could “take [a] risk” here as he missed 192 days last season and 163 in the one prior. Fans may have fears that he would turn out to be a similar story to Danny Ings: an experienced Premier League striker who has now fallen behind the pace. Ings only netted five in three seasons. Perhaps they should look to a younger, more exciting prospect who could be an option for many years.
