Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Hwang Hee-chan is once again attracting attention in the transfer market. Fabrizio Romano reports that two clubs have already approached Wolves about the 29-year-old, less than a year after the West Midlands side rejected a huge offer from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.
In the summer of 2024, Wolves rejected a £21 million offer from Marseille following his 12-goal season in the Premier League. Then manager Gary O’Neil stated that Hwang remained a key part of his plans, despite interest from multiple clubs. Wolves are unlikely to get an offer of that size this window, however, as he struggled to keep his starting position last season under Vítor Pereira, finding the back of the net just twice.
Hwang endured a difficult 2024/25 season, scoring just twice in 25 appearances in all competitions. Under Pereira, he often found himself on the bench or omitted from the squad entirely due to injuries and increased competition for attacking roles, with Pereira seemingly preferring Gonçalo Guedes. Pereira admitted that he could not guarantee starts for the South Korean, insisting that he “doesn’t give gifts” in a clear message to the out-of-form attacker.
Earlier in the transfer window, Championship side Birmingham City reportedly showed interest in signing Hwang; however, the South Korean forward is said to be reluctant to move down to the second tier, preferring to continue his playing career in a top-flight league. However, his ambitions may limit the number of clubs willing to meet Wolves’ financial expectations. If no suitable offer comes in, he may find himself on the fringes once again.
As the summer transfer window progresses, Wolves face important decisions regarding their forward line, with Mathues Cunha and Guedes already gone, and deals being worked on for Fábio Silva. Pereira is clearly looking to rejuvenate the attacking department.
With genuine interest emerging and the players’ ambitions influencing potential moves, the club will need to consider any offers.
