It’s that time of year again, when models, actors, and athletes strip down to their skivvies – bathing suits, more specifically – for the annual, and iconic, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Joining the herd, for her second SI Swimsuit appearance, is 2023 world champion surfer and Paris 2024 Olympic gold medalist, Caroline Marks. The 23-year-old was photographed for the spread in her hometown of Boca Raton, Florida, where she donned a bevy of various swimwear, accessorized with the gold medal from her historic 2024 Olympic win in Teahupo’o, Tahiti.
Speaking with SI for the spread, Marks talked about surfing and its relation to the sexualization of its athletes, particularly females, and how that affects her psyche:
“It’s not only that I’m a professional athlete, but I’m also in a sport where I’m always in a bikini, and it is very exposing,” Marks said. “I think for me, it was weird because there would be, like, thousands of positive comments and then, like, one negative one, and unfortunately, sometimes you just focus on the negative one.”
She added: “At the end of the day, I think when people are making negative comments about you, it’s usually their own insecurity, and I think just learning that has been really helpful.”
This isn’t Marks’ first SI Swimsuit rodeo; she appeared in the feature back in 2020, when she was just 18 years old. During that shoot, like this one, Marks echoed her positive experience:
“The whole crew I was working with, everyone was so positive. I felt really comfortable and confident and, you know, I had just turned 18, so for me, that was like a really big deal of like kind of showing more of my body and being around like a bigger production…Still to this day [it] is one of my favorite shoots and it’s really cool to have all the photos still and just have those memories.”
