Alexander Bublik Speechless After Triple-Breadstick US Open Defeat to Jannik Sinner: 'This is Insane!'

Jannik Sinner needed just 81 minutes to take his revenge on Alexander Bublik in the fourth round of the US Open, held on Monday (September 1). It was Bublik who became the first player other than Carlos Alcaraz to beat Sinner this year, in the second round of the Halle Open, following which, the Kazakh ace lifted the title.

But in his first fourth-round US Open clash, Sinner handed him a triple breadstick. It was the best performance the Italian ace produced so far in the tournament. The fact that throughout the match, Bublik could win just three games completely stunned him.

You’re so good, this is insane! I am not bad, like what the (expletive)?

Alexander Bublik told Jannik Sinner during the customary handshake

Before demolishing Bublik, Sinner survived a scare in the third round as Canada’s Denis Shapovalov took the first set off him. The four-time Grand Slam champion now took a 5-2 head-to-head lead over Bublik. It was also his second win over the World No.24 this year in their three meetings.

Bublik, who made it to a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in his career at the 2025 French Open (lost to Sinner), last won a title at the ATP 250 Austrian Open Kitzbuhel. It was his third trophy of the season after his wins at the Halle Open and Swiss Open Gstaad.

Jannik Sinner will face Lorenzo Musetti next

Jannik Sinner‘s quarterfinal opponent is none other than his compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, who, like him, has breezed past opponents one after the other. Musetti also has dropped just one set so far, in the first round against big-serving Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Before scheduling his career’s third clash with the first seed, Musetti knocked out Spain’s Jaume Munar. Sinner has won both the matches he has played against the 10th seed, and they will be facing each other for the first time since the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals.

The pressure is there; it has always been there. It will be a very interesting match to watch, it’s always different when two compatriots play, an Italian against another Italian, those are always different duels. He is an incredible player, very talented, playing at a high level. He has fought in some moments of the season, but now he is in good form, in an incredible state, so the pressure is on me.

Jannik Sinner said at the press conference

Musetti will be playing his career’s first US Open quarterfinal. This year in Majors, he reached the semifinals at Wimbledon. Sinner is playing the tournament as the defending champion and has reached the last eight for the third time.

I like these challenges, it’s great from the Italian perspective, there will definitely be an Italian in the semifinals of a Grand Slam. Now these things seem normal, but they’re not. It’s very difficult to reach these stages, but the opportunity is huge; they are becoming more constant, and everything is changing.

Jannik Sinner added

Musetti last won a title at the 2022 Tennis Napoli Cup, but since then, he has lost four finals, including the Monte Carlo Masters to Carlos Alcaraz this year. Sinner has so far clinched two titles, both in Grand Slam events. He defeated Alexander Zverev to defend his crown at the Australian Open before denying Alcaraz the three-peat at Wimbledon.

Apart from these Majors, the 24-year-old also played the finals of the French Open, Italian Open, and the Canadian Open, losing all to the five-time Grand Slam champion (in Toronto, he gave a walkover because of an illness). Sinner is also bidding to become the first man since Roger Federer (2008) to defend the US Open title.
