Coco Gauff continued her strong US Open campaign with another commanding performance, dismantling Magdalena Frech in straight sets (6-3, 6-1) to book her place in the Round of 16. The 21-year-old American barely put a foot wrong in the third-round encounter, overwhelming her opponent to seal a blockbuster showdown with former US open champion Naomi Osaka.
While her on-court dominance made headlines, it was Gauff’s candid reflections in her post-match press conference that drew equal attention. Asked about the controversies and drama involving Daniil Medvedev and Elena Ostapenko in the opening week of the tournament, Gauff noted that such incidents were nothing unusual on tour—though their New York stage amplified the spotlight.
“It's, A, end of the year. B, I mean, we're in New York, and, you know the fans here, I love them, but you know they can definitely, if you're on the wrong side of things- they just, they're into the match. They're passionate tennis fans,” said Gauff.
“They know what's going on and and they're used to other events, I think, like major events happening in the city, not that aren't tennis,” Gauff explained.
She added that for players, these flare-ups are often routine. “To be honest, like with some of the drama, I feel like it happens frequently on tour, but because it's here, it gets more social media clicks. But some of the players, these are reoccurring things that for us in the tennis world is not surprising,” said the American.
“So it's like, okay, whatever. But because it's here in New York, and maybe not as many tennis fans or things like that, it gets blown up on social media. But I think for us players, it's just like another week on tour and these things happen more frequently than maybe the ones who just tune in to the Grand Slam,” she added.
Her perspective highlights the contrast between the tennis world’s inside view and the way casual fans and media seize on controversies at marquee events.
With her calm outlook off the court and clinical tennis on it, Gauff now heads into one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament. Her clash with Osaka promises a symbolic meeting of two generations of women’s tennis stars under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium.
