Felix Auger-Aliassime has had a bit of a season to forget at times but he has managed to turn it around at the US Open reaching the fourth round with success over Alexander Zverev through the night 4-6, 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4. He is into the second week at the season's final Grand Slam for the first time since he reached the semi-finals in 2021.
Auger-Aliassime was epic in particular from the net at the US Open winning 24 out of 27 net points to eliminate Zverev in three hours and 48 minutes. Zverev held set point at 6-5 in the second set tie-break in a part of the game which could've dictated the rest in his favour but he was unable to convert and the Canadian rose from there.
Zverev started to get more and more annoyed as his groundstrokes started to fail. He slammed his racquet after conceding an early break in the third set. Auger-Aliassime consolidated with superb serving and forehand winners. This kept Zverev under pressure in the rallies. Auger-Aliassime broke midway through the fourth set and he closed it out on serve as Zverev lost the earliest he ever has at the US Open since 2018.
"Yeah, this feels good. This feels good. You know, Blair, I’ve been coming here since 2018. I’m still young, but it’s been a few years and I’m working my way. For some people it might be the first time they’ve watched me tonight, but this feels really good. Obviously, job’s not done — the tournament’s still going. But this means a lot to me. It’s been a lot of hard work and many years of building up to this," said Auger-Aliassime on court post match.
"It was a nervous start in the first few games, and then after that it was pretty crazy, pretty flawless. But Sasha was still serving unbelievable, so it was tough to get a break. I got a bit lucky in the tiebreak that it went my way. But with the way I played in the third and fourth sets, I still think, whatever happened in the second, I would’ve given myself a chance. So yeah, I was seeing it big today. It’s good when you feel like that on the court for sure."
Using that win as confidence, he now faces Andrey Rublev who took down Coleman Wong and he has to overturn a 7-1 Head-to-Head deficit. "I think I’d be a fool not to. This feels good. I’m going to try to recover as best as I can — even though I looked not tired, it was tough on the legs. A lot of sprints, a lot of, like you said, forehands. So I’ll try to recover my best. But these guys — Sascha, Andrey — they’re all top players and they’ve been at the top of the game for many years. I’m just trying to battle with them in these matches for sure."
But while he is good on court, he joked he has no clue about the wedding planning a year on from getting engaged. "I don’t know — you’ll have to ask her! I’m busy playing, you know. All I know is I’ve got a fitting the day after the finals here, so that’s about it. But she’s been doing amazing, planning everything. It’s been a great year on a personal level as well. We’re really happy. After the tournament, we’ve got a special, special moment for both of us coming in just a couple of weeks."
Also elsewhere Alexander Bublik, the 23rd seed set up a meeting with defending champion Jannik Sinner after taking advantage of Tommy Paul's body falling apart on him at the end.
He knocked out the American 7-6 (7-5) 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 with the win ending at 1:15am local time. Paul had spent three more hours on court than Bublik this tournament and it showed as he could barely move during the final set. Bublik
