Iga Swiatek continues her epic run at the US Open with the former champion producing a statement win over Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the quarter-finals again at Flushing Meadows.
It is a third US Open Quarter-Final for Swiatek who took down the 13th seed 6-3, 6-1 in just 64 minutes. While the schedule belongs to Gauff v Osaka tonight, it is very much a night to savour for Swiatek who as ever went about her business comfortably to continue her superb form.
Albeit Swiatek perhaps had her scare last round which is a bit ominous for the rest of the field, she was 5-1 down and had set points against Anna Kalinskaya who left the court in tears after she lost after spurning a huge chance. Having the Pole in the palm of her hands, she let it slip and it could be a bad sign for the rest of the field that they might not catch her now.
Unless of course you are Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff who will still be in the conversation, but also aren't playing the tennis Swiatek did against Alexandrova at times and it could set up a thrilling final quarter in New York. Swiatek came into the tie leading the Head-to-Head 4-2. But on outdoor hard courts, it was Alexandrova's ball game.
She led narrowly 2-1, something that was a known factor beforehand and Alexandrova's game style owes it to be a bit of a nightmare for top players. She sits on that cusp of the chasing pack that can always mix it up.
Alexandrova won at the Gippsland Trophy in 2021 and Miami 2024 and also made the Monterrey final just last week losing to Diana Shnaider so has been in some form as of late. She conceded just 10 games over three matches to get to the Last 16.
But Swiatek has been enjoying a summer renaissance. She won Wimbledon and CIncinnati this year and has won 18 out of her last 19 matches. She was stretched by Suzan Lamens and also against Kalinskaya but against Alexandrova, it was ruthless focus and the look of a player who'd used up her nine lives in the games prior and was zoned in on the task in hand.
Only 24 so not exactly an old timer, she became also the first player to reach the Quarter-Finals at every single major and is the youngest to achieve that since Maria Sharapova in 2005. Only three players in Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka and Aryna Sabalenka currently active have reached more Grand Slam Quarter-Finals now than her and Sabalenka is only just marginal. Writing Swiatek off should be done at a peril as she has proven again how much of a formidable force she is.
She faces either Amanda Anisimova next or Beatriz Haddad Maia for a spot in the semi-finals.
