Former World No. 1 Naomi Osaka is officially back, after making light work of the No. 1-ranked American, Coco Gauff, in the US Open fourth round. In a match that lasted just over an hour, Osaka dropped only six points on serve, sealing a commanding 6-3 6-2 victory.

How the match unfolded

The four-time Major champion started the first set with a bang, breaking Gauff’s serve in the very first game. From there, she never looked back, dominating with her trademark big serve and heavy forehand. Osaka would lose just two service points all set against who is arguably the best returner in the women’s game right now, and she closed the set out by breaking Gauff’s serve once again in a display of ruthless and aggressive tennis.

The second set began on more even terms, with both players holding serve early and playing conservatively. The tension was evident, as both knew how pivotal this set would be. Once again, Osaka took the initiative, generating multiple break points in the sixth game. She converted on her first opportunity to take a 4-2 lead and never relinquished control.

From there, Osaka’s momentum carried her through as she won the final two games to complete a dominant victory. This wasn’t just a win; it was a statement performance, announcing to the tennis world that she’s back where she belongs, near the top of the game.

Osaka Rises, Gauff Looks to Regroup

This victory marks both a confidence boost and a clear return to Slam-winning contention for Naomi Osaka. It is her biggest win by both ranking and status since her comeback. In this form, she will enter her next match, against the winner of Marta Kostyuk and Karolina Muchova, as the favorite.

As for Coco Gauff, she will look to regroup after what has been a tough couple of months since her victory at the French Open. With recent additions to her team and confidence running low, taking a break to recharge her batteries could be a wise move.
