Jannik Sinner will take on fellow compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in the quarter-finals of the US Open. The defending champion has not faced Musseti since the 2023 season and both players are currently at the zenith of their careers. Sinner is seeking to win his fifth Grand Slam in New York, while Musetti has yet to get to a major final.
Musetti’s most notable achievement in Grand Slam events was getting to the semi-finals of the 2025 Roland Garros, where he retired against Carlos Alcaraz. The other was at the 2024 Wimbledon Championships. He recently gained full fitness after suffering a leg injury at the French Open in June.
Jannik Sinner has lost just four matches on tour this season and has captured two Grand Slams already. He claimed his first major this year at the Australian Open in January before overcoming Carlos Alcaraz at the Wimbledon final. He arrived at the US Open following his retirement at the Cincinnati Open final due to illness.
However, the Italian has been at his best on the court, starting strong against Vit Kopriva 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. He then followed it up with a 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over former Canadian Open champion Alexei Popyrin. In the third round, he dropped a set against Denis Shapovalov before rallying back to win 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3. On Monday (September 1), he produced a statement performance against Alexander Bublik, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-1.
Lorenzo Musetti, on the other hand, struggled on the court after reaching his first Roland Garros semi-finals in June. The Italian star won just one match in four tournaments in the lead-up to the 2025 US Open. His struggle was due to a leg injury he sustained at the French Open, but in New York, he finally got to his best form.
He opened his account against French Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, winning their clash in four sets. He then overcame David Goffin in the second round 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. In the third round, Flavio Cobolli retired in the third set due to an injury after Musetti led 6-3, 6-2, 2-0. He sealed his place in the quarter-finals after beating Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.
Jannik Sinner is seeking to become the first player since Roger Federer (2004-2008) to defend the US Open men’s singles title. The Italian star is currently on a 9-match winning streak at the New York Grand Slam and has lost just three times since June. He leads Lorenzo Musetti 2-0 in their head-to-head record and has never dropped a set against the 10th seed.
But their last meeting came at the 2023 Monte Carlo Masters. Sinner and Musetti at that time were in different stages of their careers, and there has been a leap in their game and careers since then. Musetti has gone on to achieve a personal career-high ranking of World No.6, while Sinner currently sits as World No.1.
Also, Musseti, when at his best, is less predictable on the court. The one-handed backhand player often hits a variety of shots during a rally, which causes trouble for his opposition.
Match prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in four sets.
