It promises to be a thrilling second day of quarterfinal action at the US Open with two intriguing matches on the slate including an all-Italian battle. As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for both matches, as well as the action in the women’s draw, but who will secure their spot in the last four?
Zain: An all-Italian clash between the best player in the world and the No. 2-ranked Italian. Jannik Sinner enters this match as the firm favorite. He is the stronger baseliner, returner, and server, and with the way he played against Alexander Bublik in the fourth round, he remains the clear title favourite. Lorenzo Musetti will have to lean heavily on his variety, look to be aggressive with the backhand, and draw Sinner in as much as possible for cat-and-mouse exchanges. But even doing all that might not be enough for him to win a set.
Prediction: Sinner in 3
Nurein: Jannik Sinner was absolutely flawless in dismantling Alexander Bublik to reach the last eight. With two of his biggest rivals occupying the opposite side of the draw, it would take a seismic upset for him to lose before the final. Musetti has the flair but lacks the firepower to hit through his countryman. Expect another ruthless performance from the defending champion in his march to the semis.
Prediction: Sinner in 3
Jordan: Musetti needs to serve superbly, something Alexander Bublik failed to do. Although Musetti’s game is more complete than Bublik’s, Sinner will win if his compatriot cannot hold regularly. I think Carlos Alcaraz is the only player with any realistic chance of stopping Sinner in New York.
Prediction: Sinner in 3
Yesh: Sinner has been absolutely untouchable this tournament. There is zero reason to think that will change in the quarterfinal. Or, honestly, before the final. He will be far too strong for his countryman.
Zain: This quarterfinal represents a huge opportunity for both players, as Alex de Minaur takes on the rejuvenated Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Canadian brings the bigger weapons to the contest, with his serve and forehand likely to be the match-deciding shots. Alex de Minaur, by contrast, thrives on turning matches into battles of endurance, extending rallies and applying relentless pressure through defense. It is a classic clash of styles, but the edge goes to the more confident shot-maker to find a way through.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4
Nurein: After an underwhelming Grand Slam campaign in 2025, Auger-Aliassime is finishing with a flourish as he chases a second Top 10 win at this year’s US Open. The Canadian appears to have rediscovered that winning edge in Slams and should be fancied to knock out De Minaur. The luck of the draw has been on the Australian’s side. This will be his first Top 50 opponent at the tournament, and against a player who could seriously harm his chances of making the semifinal.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4
Jordan: Auger-Aliassime was outstanding in the previous two rounds against Alexander Zverev and Rublev. But de Minaur is a different type of challenge, and will test the Canadian’s nerve much more with his superb return and defensive skills. Auger-Aliassime needs a different mindset in this matchup, and I am not sure he will manage to find it.
Prediction: de Minaur in 4
Yesh: Auger-Aliassime is finding his vintage form again. We expected greatness from him when he first entered the scene, but it’s taken far longer than anyone thought after his initial breakthrough way back in 2018. He’s there now, though, and I don’t think the Australian has what it takes to slow him down.
Prediction: Auger-Aliassime in 4
