With Pac-Man World 2: Re-Pac showing Namco’s new interest in revisiting the yellow sphere’s adventures as a 3D platformer, it could be wondered where we could go next to explore new worlds. What could be in store after its release to expand on his presence as a platform mascot, much the same as the blue blur and red plumber?
While there are other titles that could be remade for new audiences, of what would prove a hit for Bandai Namco to take the iconic arcade hero to. When could the next time our beloved PAC-MAN be back?
It may not be very well known that there was another entry in the World Series, and for good reason. As the 3rd installment took a lot of different turns that proved unfavorable to fans of the previous entry. Opting to take our adventurer to darker worlds and blander gameplay. Focused on action combat that felt a little out of place to have our jolly fellow to take part in.
However, it could be given a second chance in life to allow the game to truly flourish into what it could be. As the best factor in a remake is how much better it can make the original–what better way than to turn bad into good?
While it has been unconfirmed if we will see it, Namco seems to have acknowledged it a little, as it confirmed the return of the Pac’s voice actor from the game: Martin T. Sherman! So, at the very least, his talent will be remembered, or it could even be possible for there to be serious interest in the concept.
Even though he is joining Sonic for a race on the track, a crack at the formula focused on Namco’s beloved pellet muncher could be fun. Taking a page out of Crash Bandicoot to remake the racing title, it could go even beyond that by representing a wider range of the series history–possibly as a means of getting fans to forget a certain Ms. being axed from the game.
Though this could prove unsuccessful, pitting him against Mario Kart and Sonic Racing, Namco has been a key developer of Mario Kart 8 previously. It shows that there is some knowledge of the formula on the team that could be interested in taking a chance behind the wheel. If anything else, it could be a way for Namco to even include other hits of theirs onto the roster. Having Heihachi Mishima taking one for a spin and show his Mishima style of driving, or bringing classics like Dig Dug or Mappy among possible racers.
When there are no more games to remake, the most obvious conclusion to come to to bring our ghost hunter back onto the scene would be to bring him to a brand new world altogether. Similar to when Crash Bandicoot 4 revived the orange marsupial to the limelight in a new experience, maybe PAC-MAN could do the same?
It would certainly allow Namco to take him to new lengths to do something we have yet to see before. Granting him new abilities, new worlds, and a new story to traverse, to and have new characters be brought in. While it is uncertain what exactly they could do, as traditionally being an puzzle maze title could mean a platformer may not be at the top of priorities for pushing the series forward–it can only remain so stagnant for so long.
With the release of PAC-MAN World 2: Re-Pac later this year, new interest in the character can be brought forth. Being the most well-remembered of the World series leaves heavy expectations after the modest success the previous remake granted the Pac with. Wherever they take the series to, it can only be hoped that high interest remains–and focus less on more drastic diversions to these beloved icons like was introduced with Shadow Labyrinth.
