New survival horror game Phase Zero debuted its free demo on Steam on May 26, 2025, and has been overwhelmingly well-received. Developed by SPINA Studio, an indie team of experienced developers, and published by Superhot Presents, Phase Zero promises nostalgic imagery and old-school survival horror gameplay with a modern twist. The developers also noted that the game was designed to run on a wide range of PCs.
A release date for the full game has yet to be set, but players can add it to their Steam wishlist now.
Meant to pay homage to classic PS1 survival horror games like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, Phase Zero is seeking to reenvision that nostalgic aesthetic with passion and respect for the genre’s roots. With fixed camera angles and pre-rendered 3D backgrounds, the game tells its story in chapters as it switches between the viewpoints of two unique protagonists. Phase Zero offers up a strong horror ambiance with intentional, immersive sound design.
Players are given the option to flee from or face head-on mutated, fleshy monsters who were once the very people of the town the game takes place in. With a 32-bit PSX graphics style and a low-resolution aesthetic, Phase Zero is sure to satisfy fans of old-school horror with its authentic retro presentation.
The game is set in the isolated harbor town of Flint Peak. With a severe snowstorm brewing on the horizon, one might think the weather is the town’s biggest concern. . . But a mysterious illness turning the locals into grotesque, mutated creatures with a thirst for blood might beg to differ. Players step into the shoes of both Mary, a recent arrival to Flint Peak working as a news reporter, and Guy, a Flink Peak local injured engineer.
Navigate the disturbing environments of Phase Zero in which tissues have overgrown building walls, and the pipes are bursting with meaty flesh. Players must control both protagonists as they scavenge for resources, fight to survive, and attempt to uncover the truth behind the cryptic sickness.
Phase Zero’s free demo now available on Steam offers players a full chapter of the upcoming release. It features 30 minutes of gameplay focused on one of the game’s two main protagonists, giving potential buyers the chance to experience the nostalgic gameplay and modernized mechanics for themselves. Those who’ve already given Phase Zero a chance have been very pleased so far, praising the game for its old-school vibes, use of tank controls, and clear inspiration from games like the original Resident Evil.
For those craving a retro-style horror game in the vein of foundational classics, Phase Zero might be the one to scratch that itch.
