Role-playing games or RPGs have been gaining popularity on various platforms lately. RPGs are games where the player assumes the role of their character in a fictional setting. A notable example is Dungeons & Dragons, where players inhabit a fantasy world. RPGs offer expansive lore and the ability to customize your characters extensively, so it’s no wonder this remains a popular genre. The following RPGs have been given bad reviews for bugs and other errors, but they are still worth playing.

Realms of Arkania: Blade of Destiny Revised

This is actually a remake of a 1992 RPG. There is turn-based content, a 3D world, and a legendary quest to prevent Orc invasion. It is very similar in content to the original, but with updated graphics. The reason it was given such a bad review was because it was a remake, and some thought it was inferior. This game was also super buggy, and the graphics do leave something to be desired.

Call For Heroes: Pompolic Wars

Call for Heroes: Pompolic Wars was released in 2007 and is an action RPG. It’s a third-person action game that has RPG elements in a fantasy world. Fans felt that this game was too boring; the combat is bulky and can be boring. The jumping is inaccurate, and characters feel wobbly. It’s also a somewhat simplistic game, which some fans complain of.

Overlord: Fellowship of Evil

This RPG was released in 2015 and is an action RPG. It features “co-op gameplay.” It features a host of characters to choose from, like the sorcerer Malady and the warrior Inferna. The game has dark humor and procedurally-generated levels, making for immersive gameplay. It was written by award-winning scriptwriter Rhianna Pratchett, which makes it a unique and interesting play.

Infestation: Survivor Stories

This game is a horror MMO. You are fighting zombies. It is set in a post-apocalyptic world. It features first-person and third-person shooting. There is player-versus-player combat, and it is essentially a survival game. It emphasizes the hunger and thirst of the character, so if this is your thing, give it a shot.

Final Fantasy: All The Bravest

Final Fantasy: All the Bravest is a mobile game. It has a lot of elements of the previous Final Fantasies, but the game was widely criticized for a lack of depth and story, and features too many in-app purchases. It has been referred to as a “cash grab.” But, if you’re a fan of Final Fantasy, this is one you might want to add to your list.
Editor’s Note: Keep in mind, this mobile game was completely shut down in 2023, so any attempt to play would have to be through an emulator.

Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne

Multiple versions of this game have existed. The original was published in Japan in 2003. It is an anime RPG. It follows a high school student in post-apocalyptic Japan. It features turn-based combat. The design of the game has been highly praised, but some fans object to the minimal storytelling.

If you like playing RPGs, these are a few to think about. All of these games have their issues, but are at least worth a glance or two. Who knows? You may find your next obsession.
