Indie developer Dionous Games is introducing gamers to an entirely new point-and-click adventure, Theropods, where both humans and dinosaurs exist together. The game is built one pixel at a time, and the prehistoric setting is a striking backdrop against the human protagonist.  The game is inspired by retro classics, but that does not mean it lacks depth. The developers made sure to update the complexity for a modern audience. The game will be debuting Monday, June 9, at Steam Next Fest.

Theropods Feels Like A Modern Classic Fit Into a 90s Gem Skin

Theropods is a retro indie game that looks to evoke the feelings of a 1990s lost gem classic, yet still brings a modern flair to the overall game complexity. The foundation of the game is classic adventure elements with point-and-click mechanics as a delivery vessel, but it goes beyond those simple descriptors. The animated pixel art is a callback to earlier consoles like the Nintendo and Super Entertainment Systems, while the storytelling harkens to more modern styles.

Players of Theropods will be challenged to solve environmental puzzles, survive deadly attacks, and uncover the game’s hidden mystery. Probably the most memorable feature, though, is that the storytelling is done entirely visually. This visual storytelling style allows players to immerse their minds fully in the game and use their creativity to complete the full scope of everything that Theropods has to offer.

“We started Theropods as a tiny Flash game in a 2015 game jam,” said Kostas Skiftas and Sarah Duffield-Harding, developers of Theropods and founders of Lost Token. “Over the years, we faced numerous setbacks and were driven by passion alone. What carried us through wasn’t a single innovation, but a quiet, persistent belief in the game’s unique voice and its potential to connect with players.”

The development team highlights the key features that set the game apart from all the others saturating the rest of the adventure genre.

KEY FEATURES:
  • Prehistoric Puzzle Adventure – Explore a lush world where dinosaurs and humans cross paths
  • Cinematic Pixel Art – Hand-animated frame-by-frame, then transformed into stunning pixel art
  • Classic Point-and-Click, Modern Feel – Streamlined, intuitive mechanics with zero hand-holding
  • Sci-Fi Surprises – A layered story that evolves into something far stranger than expected

Interested players can download a demo on Steam right now. With the intrigue and mystery outlined above, the game should keep players fully engrossed. Watch the full trailer below.

Final Thoughts

Theropods is an indie game that focuses on its strengths and is not afraid to challenge the status quo. Indie games do not have the budgetary prowess that the AAA studios do, yet they have the ability to play into other areas that larger studios are not willing to do. The visual storytelling and retro pixel art speak to a developer who knows how to lean into their strengths within the constraints of being an indie developer, and it pays off greatly here. The game will be available in 2025, though it can be downloaded as a demo on Steam right now. There will be planned console and mobile versions released in the future as well.
