The Indiana Fever didn't need Caitlin Clark to soar past Minnesota in last night's Commissioner's Cup, but what she did afterwards may result in sweeping changes for her teammates and fellow players.
Indiana coasted to a 74-59 win in the WNBA's in-season title game, leading to a $500,000 payday for her team (and an additional $120K in crypto courtesy of Coinbase)— that will be split up evenly amongst the Fever's roster.
But what doesn't make sense to Clark is that Commissioner's Cup winners get more for winning the league's in-season tournament than winning a WNBA title. And that led to a direct call out aimed at commissioner Cathy Engelbert.
"Listen, you get more for this [the Commissioner's Cup] than you do if you're a [WNBA] champion," Clark said on Sydney Colson's celebratory Instagram Live. "Makes no sense. Someone tell Cathy to help us out."
As things stand right now, the total prize pool for the WNBA's postseason is $500,000. But the winners of the playoffs only receive roughly half of that to split amongst themselves (about $20,000 per player compared to $30,000).
It's definitely fair to wonder why the Commissioner's Cup pays out more than bringing home a WNBA title. And it likely won't take long for this one to arrive on Engelbert's desk.
With the league's collective bargaining negotiations coming up, this could be Clark's way of applying some public pressure on the W's owners— and women's basketball could be better for it.
