Angel Reese has been making plenty of buzz lately after landing on the cover of NBA 2K26’s WNBA Edition. But the spotlight hasn’t come without controversy—this time involving former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III. Things heated up quickly, and even Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., had to step in.
The drama started last week when Griffin shared an altered version of the NBA 2K26 cover featuring Reese. In his post, he urged people to speak out against racism targeting the Sky forward and talked about the importance of talking through differences to promote unity.
Bernice King agreed with the message but felt Griffin crossed a line by continuing to post about Reese rather than reaching out directly.
“I agree. That’s why I suggest you call Angel Reese and stop posting about her,” she wrote on her X account.
What escalated things further was Griffin’s claim that Reese “hates Caitlin Clark,” something he said came from someone in her inner circle. That didn’t sit well with the Chi-Town Barbie, who quickly clapped back.
Reese called out Griffin’s actions as “nasty work” and accused him of lying just for clout.
Angel’s mom, Angel Webb Reese—aka Mama Reese—also stepped into the picture and didn’t hold back. In a comment under Griffin’s post, she defended her daughter and shut down his supposed source.
“Man stop with the
My daughter’s ‘circle’ is so small & tight so I’d be interested 2 know who called U
Whomever U say ‘called’ U is not in her circle 2 speak on her feelings towards a media/fandom made up beef. Just stay on that side bc the doors are closed over here,” she wrote.
As of writing, Griffin hasn’t responded to Mama Reese’s comment and has stayed silent. But others have chimed in. Even former NBA player Etan Thomas joined the conversation, accusing Griffin of fueling racism instead of helping shut it down.
