Sky’s Tyler Marsh drops stern Kate Martin declaration

Right before the WNBA went on break ahead of the FIBA World Cup, the Chicago Sky made a roster move, bringing in guard Kate Martin who has become a fan favorite across her three seasons thus far in the WNBA. She was signed to a developmental contract, and regardless of her status, Sky head coach Tyler Marsh is thrilled to have her on the roster.

“I love Kate. In any capacity, just having someone as tough and selfless as she is fits right into the mold of what we want this team to be about,” Marsh said recently. “So, even in a development role, we want to have her around. She belongs in this league.”

The No. 18 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the former Iowa star was originally drafted by the Las Vegas Aces. She played her rookie year for the Aces before being selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the 2025 expansion draft. The Valkyries then cut Martin during training camp this year and she quickly signed with the Los Angeles Sparks.

Kate Martin struggled to find consistent playing time with the Sparks, but she now gets another WNBA opportunity with the Sky.

Martin appeared in 17 games with the Sparks at a little over seven minutes per game. She averaged 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds with splits of 37 percent shooting from the field, 30.8 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 62.5 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

The Sky resume the regular season on Thursday, Sept 17 against the Washington Mystics. They have already been eliminated from playoff contention.
