Becky Lynch has already planted the seeds for a potential rivalry with AJ Lee, who could soon be returning to WWE. Speculation is growing over the real-life wife of CM Punk making a stunning return to come to her husband's aid against Lynch and Seth Rollins.
Becky Lynch debuted on the main roster three months after AJ Lee essentially retired from WWE in April 2015 after WrestleMania 31. There are remarkable similarities between the pair's meteoric rises in the company, as both organically gained the support of fans.
AJ Lee became a three-time Divas Champion during her in-ring career and bid farewell to WWE just before the Divas revolution took place. It was during her time in the company that she first encountered a young, upcoming Lynch.
Becky Lynch recalled their meeting in her autobiography titled Becky Lynch: The Man. She stated: "When I opened my eyes, I noticed that the Women's Champion, or as they so awfully named it, the Divas Champion, AJ Lee, was standing to the left of me, typing furiously into her phone. Without picking up on social cues, I enthusiastically greeted her, 'hello', four octaves higher than normal, with the underlying desperation of please like me."
Lynch added: "'I'm Rebecca', she looked up as I stretched out my hand to shake hers, grunted what may have been a 'hi' before going back to finger punching her phone, leaving me with my arm out stretched, fondling the air. 'This is going horribly', I thought as I sat on the bathroom stall."
This is an interesting layer of a potential feud between the duo for WWE to tap into should AJ indeed return. Lynch has taken on a cocky heel gimmick that feels scorned by her peers, including CM Punk, whom she called the "poster child of apathy", and given the frostiness of her first encounter with his wife, it could lead to some tense exchanges.
The potential story of AJ Lee partnering up with CM Punk to help him handle Becky Lynch in his war with Seth Rollins may have been a long time coming. Talk of AJ making a huge return has only been fueled recently as a result of the Clash in Paris finish and Lynch's comments to Punk on RAW this week.
If you rewind to March earlier this year, you may remember the controversy that ensued online after Lynch posted a tweet that didn't go down too well. She made light of Punk and Roxanne Perez, who idolized AJ, wearing matching attire and wrote: "Catching up on RAW... I don't think I'm the one who needs to come get MY Man".
Hey Becky lynch why you deleted the tweet?? Is something wrong @BeckyLynchWWE ??? pic.twitter.com/dTZgpqlKMr— The Wrestling Blog (@WrestlingBlog_) March 4, 2025
Lynch deleted the post after receiving backlash because AJ wasn't involved in WWE programming, but it could be raised in a possible rivalry involving the trio. It would be a clever way for The Man to get under Punk's skin if we spent weeks getting teased about a possible return, which could occur at Wrestlepalooza (September 21).
