Darby Allin has been a staple of AEW programming since the company's inception. He has recently been involved in a storyline that could have seen him compete with Bryan Danielson for the AEW championship. However, a loss to Jon Moxley last Wednesday ended those dreams for the time being.
Nevertheless, Allin's involvement in that storyline shows his growth within the company. He's seen as one of the most reliable in-ring talents and is always willing to put his body on the line. However, former executive vice president Cody Rhodes believes Allin's all-or-nothing style of wrestling could make or break his opportunity to secure a top spot within AEW.
"The experience he’s had now with Sting, the experience of seeing changes in the company — that’s the kind of experience you need to see clearly and realize, ‘Hey, I can be…’ I hate using this term, but ‘I can be the guy,’" Rhodes said during a recent interview on the 'YoJoshMartinez' YouTube channel. "Absolutely, he could 100% potentially be that person...But also, the crazy stunts — like climbing mountains and getting hit by buses — you can’t be the face of the company if you’re not relied upon. You can’t wrestle anybody when you’re in a body cast, you know what I’m saying? That’s just dumb. But I say that with love.”
Allin is viewed as one of AEW's pillars. He has grown with the company and continues to add to his skill set. The fans appear to love him and his style of wrestling, and his time with Sting helped elevate him to a new level. Still, Rhodes is right; Allin needs to remove some of his personal distractions if he wants to take things to the next level.
According to a recent report from Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Allin is being lined up for a potential championship run, but there's no timeline for when that will occur.
“We’ve heard talk of Allin getting a run as champion no matter who wins [between Strickland and Danielson],” Meltzer wrote. “We know that’s been talked about seriously, but as to when, that’s less clear.”
If Allin can stay healthy and potentially shelve the plans to scale Mt. Everest or add more daredevil stunts to his resume, he will undoubtedly earn a shot at becoming one of the top faces at AEW. He's earned the opportunity to do that.
However, if Tony Khan can't trust him to make smart decisions outside of the ring, it's unlikely he will be entrusted with becoming a champion, not when the company is trying to claw back its viewership and attendance figures.
