PLAYERS: Steve Nash
Hey Yardbarkers- With the start of the NBA season approaching, let's get ready for The Other Season! The Other Season (part of the NBA 2K9 video game) is a fantasy league where myself and 7 other NBA players are the owners and you get the chance to play for our team. Pretty cool, right? I'm going to be posting questions on here for the next few weeks that will give you the chance to play for my fantasy team. I'm going to pick five people with the best answers. The five will also get a copy of the game for either PS3 or Xbox. Take a look at www.theotherseason.com to learn more about the fantasy league. I'm looking forward to having you on my team! Okay, so here we go... With this season's rookie class having so many good players, which rookie do you think will make the biggest impact in fantasy basketball? - Steve Nash

    • Danilo Gallinari. The reason I think Gallinari will have the biggest impact is because he's playing under Mike D'Antoni. As you know Steve, Mike supports an open free flowing style of play that benefits the european and international style of play. Just ask Barbose or Diaw. I belive Gallinari will get alot of minutes too because New York is in a rebuilding mode. Although the Knicks have " SUPERSTARS" like Marbury, Crawford and Randolph, Gallinari will surely be a fan favourite in New York where there is a large Italian community. This could be another reason to support Gallinari getting minutes and producing.
      Mitchell

i think Michael Beasley will have the biggest impact just because he's playing with D-Wade and opposing defenses can't focus on both of them.

I have to go with Michael Beasley. He will contribute in every category as he should be good for 15 and 10 each night. Plus he doesn't have the pressure of some rookies as he has players like Dwayne Wade and Shawn Marion around him.

I'd probably go with Beasley also. I think FB hit the nail on the head: every category.

D-man, have you forgotten about star Yardbarker blogger Greg Oden? Oden for sure.

    • Dewey
Does Oden count as a rookie? I guess he would, huh. Yeah, then G.O. all the way. Squints, once again coming correct. Thank you, sir.
      • britneyrose
Yep, Greg will be playing his rookie season this year.

And I'm going to have to agree with you two, Oden all the way.
Provided he stays healthy of course, front page of the Oregonian yesterday was a down right SCARE!
        • DaHibachi
do you play video games? Or do you have a ps3? If you win and you don't want the game, you can give it to me, hahaha
        • britneyrose
          For sure, PJ.
          I actually wasn't commenting to win...just to agree. ;-)

          Pele-who? I don't know who you're talking about.....

Michael Beasley will have the most significant impact. He should contribute in both scoring and rebounding, and chip in with solid assist numbers for the forward position through D-Wade and Marion. The only area that I would be concerned with would be FT%.

I know it's not sexy to go with the #1 overall pick, but I'm taking Derrick Rose. Never underestimate a solid point guard who can control the offense and set up plays. Doesn't hurt that D-Rose can score a few baskets himself, too.

Brook Lopez by far. He should influence at least half the teams just by having crazy quotes that end up being used as funny team names.

Hands down it has to be Michael Beasley. I think whoever mentioned earlier is wrong about Beasley not having the pressure on him. The Heat are just a few years removed from a NBA title, and last year ended as one of the worst teams in the league. Beasley will be counted on to be a force on the boards where the Heat are sorely lacking in effectiveness. WIth Mourning out until likely the midseason, Beasley will need to not only score inside, but rebound and keep the interior at least moderately stable so Marion and Wade can handle things along the perimeter and penetrate more easily. Not to mention the fact that the Heat play in what is probably the weakest division in the NBA, an even moderately decent performance this year by Beasley mixed with Shawn Marion and a healthy Dwyane Wade can bring this club back to the playoffs.

  • There are some pretty obvious choices here, Beasley, Rose, and Mayo, being the most obvious. I can also see others having a big impact on their teams but probably not a huge one fantasy wise. When I think of someone that will be an impact in fantasy leagues I think of a player that has the potential to stuff the stat sheet night in and night out. And for me that would be Michael Beasley. In Beasley you have a 6'8" swingman that can do multiple things on both ends of the floor. He won't be a triple double threat every night but I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility for him to be a 15-7-3 guy as a rookie. Rose will probably average double figures in points and average close to 7 assists per game. Mayo, as a combo guard, could also put up good all around numbers, but I feel with his all around game that not only will Beasley score the ball but pull down a good amount of rebounds and dish out a few assists every night. I'm not sure if he'll have a great 3pt % when you translate his game to the NBA three point line but I feel he will shoot in the 35-37 percent range.

Michael Beasley. He'll be the biggest impact to Miami more than any other rookie on any other team because of what he'll bring to them.

I think Mayo is gonna show his stuff every now and then. I think something some poeple are forgetting is Beasley is at Miami, riches, fame, and women could sidetrack him. He doesn't seem as focused as some of the other rookies and even coaches have said he needs to mature. Could be a toss up which way he goes. He'll have to stay grounded to stay on his game.

Greg Oden will have the best season on the rookie class this year, even though he is coming off of surgery i think he going to be better prepared mentally and physically and he has the best chance to get the most playing time becuase portland doesnt really have any other reliable options at C so i feel he has the best chance to make a fantasy impact.

Jarred bayless from arizona, he is going to be huge for fantasy players, he can score and he should get significant minutes, the ball will be in his hands a lot, so thats a good thing.

Michael Beasley for sure. He just seems to have a chip on his shoulder. Being drafting is not good enough for him. He reminds me of Kobe when he came into the league a little cocky, but we all know how that has worked out for Kobe. I'm not saying he is Kobe, just saying he has the drive to be a great player. Plus like Kobe he will be playing with a superstar in D-Wade, who has already won a championship, that will help in his developement. B-Easy is gonna be be hard to guard.

I would say its prob Oden or Beasly or Rose BUT since everyone is saying that I will go with Joe Alexander.

Why? Because he is a white guy who can jump and babble in chinese.

  • OJ Mayo has by far the best chance to make a serious impact. With team full of youngs, and no Mike Miller hoisting all the shots, its just him and Rudy (and my boy warrick!)

  • The answer to your question: The best rookie to the otherseason is, without a doubt, yourself sir. Steve Nash is the answer.

  • Rose. He will be the center of the teams offense and defense which translates to productivity. Rose will make the biggest impact in fantasy basketball.

  • Beasly will have the best fantasy bball season, not necessarily the best actual season though. The rookie who I believe will end up being the steal of the draft is Marreese Speights. Elton Brand is just about the best mentor possible for him.

  • Kevin Love is going to be Rookie of the Year...He's a very polished player despite being only 19 years old. Playing alongside Al Jefferson, he will be able to use his ability to hit a jumper, and his passing is probably the best we've seen from a big man since Andrew Bogut came out. Even though he's the most talented player from this draft, Michael Beasley will finish second, since both Shawn Marion and Dwayne Wade will get theirs before he does. Oden will finish third, in large part due to being on a fairly stacked young team that will be making a playoff push this season.

Beasley, not only because he's a great talent, but because of how much improvement is expected of the Heat this year. He will be the best rookie on a playoff team. D-Wade looked like he was better than ever at the Olympics. The playoffs are inevitable for the Heat if health doesn't become a major issue. The eastern conference is improving, but no where close to the depth of the west, making the playoffs a more likely destination for the Heat than say the Blazers and Oden. Beasley will make an impact from day 1 with his scoring and rebounding. Add in your former teammate Shawn Marion and they have a Big 3 that has the potential to be the best after the Celtics in the East. For those reasons, Michael Beasley will have the biggest impact of any rookie from this year's crop of rookies.

beasley for sure. he just looks like an nba ready player. plus the fact that he'll get a lot of playing time and plays run for him in his rookie season. d-wade looked incredible in the olympics, so his causing turnovers and unselfish play will only benefit beasley. oden is cloooose second tho. blocks, rebs and a good shooting percentage really help in fantasy bball.

    Biggest IMPACT :
Under the radar ; Anthony Randolph.
with Ellis out or almost half the season, expect Randolph to come in and show his versatility to the world.
when playing expect numbers that go as high as a 15 6 6.

Anthony Randolph will have the biggest impact. Don Nelson has a bad reputation for not starting rookies, but in reality this is not the case at all, since he starts rookies when he sees freakish talent like what Randolph can bring to the table. With Baron Davis gone and Monta Ellis hurt, there are several holes in the Warriors' lineup that will require addressing. I expect Nelson to toy with the lineups for a while to find the optimal configuration.

But your question was not, "Which rookie will score the most?" Your question was, "Who will have the biggest impact?" The reason it will be Anthony Randolph is because Nelson toying with the lineups will affect the fantasy stats of the rest of the Warriors, especially when he gets minutes. If Marcus Williams becomes a solid pickup for backup point guard, he'll pick up assists to Randolph. When Monta Ellis comes back, his pick and roll game will be positively impacted in the games Randolph plays in. Randolph will have a chance to create shots for Maggette. And so on, and so forth. It may not be the best choice to start Randolph in your fantasy teams, but with the Warriors having nothing to lose by gambling with a constantly changing lineups, Randolph will rotate in and out, and it would be hard to argue that Randolph will not have the biggest impact on the fantasy game.

  • OJ Mayo will have the best fantasy season, he is one of the most NBA ready players in the draft this year and being on the Grizzlies and having a teammate like Rudy Gay he will get tons of opportunities to score the ball and get plenty of assists with how much Rudy improved. Also with his team being so young and rebuilding they will test him out at many spots(PG,SG, or even SF) with will help out his chance of scoring. He has a great shot and has a great NBA body to be a top rookie and a star in the NBA some day

  • Derrick Rose for sure. He can control the game, shoot, drive, anything. He is good from every aspect. Plus on a bad Bulls team, he'll make a huge impact on that team

  • Michael Beasley if he can stay focused
The Miami Heat are a perfect team for Beasley's skill set since he will be surrounded by high energy players who can score in bunches as he does (D Wade, Mario Chalmers, Shawn Marion). Plus they play defense. Michael Beasley's size and skill set also make him perfect to be able to adjust to the NBA pace and gameplay the quickest and provide a ridiculous matchup problem for the other team whether he plays the 3 or 4. Furthermore, playin against Shawn Marion in practice will greatly shorten Beasley's learning curve even more and accelerate his game to new heights.

  • I would have went with Oden but I seriously doubt he will be able to stay healthy for the whole season because of how unique and different his body is. I think that if Oden plays at least 40 games then he would have a decent season.

that's what you think. you really don't know don nelson,
he will play him as a point forward, dude can handle the ball better than
anyone on the team no lies. He will show the NBA what he's made of
he has star written all over him..
      • UofAWarriors
actually i've been listening to Don Nelson interviews from practice everyday and he said Randolph's not ready to see significant action yet, if they use any forward as a point it will be stack jack, the guy ways 195 lbs.
  • Greg Oden. Hands down. The Blazers were so close to a playoff spot last year, but with the addition of Oden now, I think they booked themselves a spot in the playoffs finally. His defensive presence, and just his intimidation factor will pay huge dues for the Blazers. Adding him to the mix with Aldridge and Roy just makes their team much better. In my honest opinion, I don't think any other rookie, except MAYBE Rose and Beasly, comes close to what Oden can accomplish this season individually, and as a team. Oden will lead the rookies in rebounding and blocked shots, book it.

  • GREG ODEN Look for the BLAZERS too have a season simaliar too the NEW ORLEANS HORNETS season last season with the difference being defense and rebounding which he did at OSU in leading the team in both plus throw in the mix ALDRIGE and ROY their a playoff team he will lead all rookie BIG MEN in rebounding and block shots and be the only ROOKIE big man in the playoffs this year CAN EVERYONE SAY BILL RUSSELL !

  • I'm going with Rudy Fernandez. Fernandez has a 7 year advantage over all rookies in this draft class. It's not even fair that Fernandez should be considered a rookie since he is a 7 year vet from the spanish league.
We all seen what nearly happened in the Gold Medal game. Fernandez dropped 22 points in 18 min against the NBA's elite. Kobe Bryant guarding him no less. What does that say about Kobe's defense?
Expect Fernandez to tally up lots of 3pt shots, a few steals a game. And at least 6-8 assists a game.
3-5 3pt fg made per game average. 3 stl a game average and 6-8 assists a game average. Should make him a very solid fantasy contributor if not the best.

  • I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Marc Gasol. Gasol's experience in the physical Euro league adds an extra demension of toughness to his game. He has the size and the drive to make something of himself in the NBA as long as he works on his mechanics and learns how to move his feet on defense.
