Here at Turn On The Jets, we decided to take a page out of Robert Mays book over at Grantland (a polite way of saying rip his article idea off) by counting down the 115 days until the New York Jets kick off, with a daily reason to get excited about their return. Mays has the whole NFL to work with, we only have the Goddamn Jets…now there is a challenge, step your game up Mays! We continue today with a look at the quietest top ten pick in recent New York football history (Note, you can track this entire series right here) In case you forgot, the New York Jets selected Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner with the 9th overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft. Considering this is New York and he was a top ten pick, Milliner has received barely a peep of press or attention. Maybe it is because the Jets took Geno Smith, a quarterback who was supposed to be taken in the first round, with the 39th overall pick. Maybe it is because they turned more heads with their selection of Sheldon Richardson with the 13th overall pick who has a gregarious personality. Yet, you shouldn’t sleep on just how good of a player the Jets got in Milliner, who was without question the top corner in this year’s class. Milliner has the right makeup to be a star in Rex Ryan’s defense, with both good size (6’0, 201 pounds) and a physical style of play. He thrived at the highest possible level of competition in college, going toe to toe with the country’s best athletes in the SEC on a weekly basis. With Antonio Cromartie tracking the opposing team’s top receiver, Milliner will likely spend most of his time being frequently targeted on the outside. Fortunately, he has solid ball skills and also the ability to slide inside for specific match-ups if Rex Ryan wants to use him as a slot corner. He has the talent to be a big upgrade over the perpetually disappointing Kyle Wilson and eventually slide over to being the team’s top corner when Antonio Cromartie moves on in a few years. Milliner may not be getting a ton of publicity right now but he was strong value with the 9th overall pick and it wouldn’t be surprising if he found himself in the discussion for Rookie of the Year 8 months from now. - NEW YORK DAILY NEWS STORY PITCH OF THE DAY - 750 words speculating on the meaning of Dee Milliner’s jersey number choice. “#27? Burkett played for the Jets from 1989-1993, peaking in the ’92 season with 57 receptions, 724 yards and 1 touchdown. More importantly, he was a beast in Tecmo Bowl Super Bowl for Super Nintendo. All you needed was to have Boomer Esiason air out the fly pattern to him.
