Good afternoon, folks, welcome to the second edition of 2012 NFL Draft Rumorville Roundup. With the scouting combine in Indianapolis now officially over, the focus the next several weeks will shift to individual pro days to be held at each respective prospect(s) university. While the combine gave many scouts a chance to visibly quantify things such as speed, strength and agility of the athletes who chose to participate, many collegiate players chose not to participate in the combine, for a number of reasons. For them, the pro days will serve as their first audition for the myriad of NFL scouts who will be in attendance.

So without further ado, here are some of the rumors flying around this week as the draft nears:

Top Tight End Prospect Orson Charles Passes Combine with Flying Colors, Fails Common Sense In Street Shoes

The top ranked tight end prospect out of the University of Georgia, Charles was impressive in the strength part of the workouts in Indy, bench pressing 225 lbs 35 times.

Yet it appears someone forgot to tell Mr. Charles that character is almost as important to NFL executives as speed and strength. Charles was pulled over early Friday morning in Athens, Ga, and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol by local police. At the end of the day, Charles may end up with nothing more than a slap on the wrist, but,  given the draft is more than a month away, one has to wonder how far his draft stock will fall after such a judgment error.

Does a potential Manning to Redskins deal mean the Browns no longer have to trade up to get Robert Griffin?

As it was announced earlier this week, the Indianapolis Colts have released their future hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning. Since that announcement there has been rampant speculation as to who will sign the All-Pro quarterback, who has gone on record as saying he'd like to be with a new team within a week. One team being thrown out there as having a strong interest in Manning is the Washington Redskins, who were also rumored to want to trade up to the No. 2 overall pick to select Heisman winner Robert Griffin of Baylor. If, however, the Redskins do sign Manning to a contract, it is assumed they will no longer be in the running for Griffin's services, and that could mean a team like  the Cleveland Browns get him at a bargain price, maybe even the
no. 4 pick.

Brandon Weeden stock falling:

So everyone has heard the phrase "where are they now" with respect to athletes, both past and present, that have seemingly fallen from the public eye. Well, a case could be made that Oklahoma State senior quarterback Brandon Weeden fell into this category despite having done nothing wrong. Weeden, a late favorite for the Heisman trophy in 2011, was also considered to be a top 10 pick in next month's draft. Yet seven months later he might be lucky to be the fourth quarterback taken overall, and the consensus is that he won't be taken until the second day at earliest.

So why all this negativity surrounding the former Cowboy gunslinger, especially given the fact that, at 6'3 and 221 pounds, he possesses the ideal size a team looks for in a QB? The uncertainty surrounding Weeden centers primarily on his age. At 29, he is one of the oldest players entering the draft, and many teams may be unwilling to build their organization around someone who will only have a few peak seasons. The best example of this might be Chris Weinke who, as a 26 year old senior from Florida State, had an okay career with the Carolina panthers but was nothing really special.

Cowboys looking for a QB?

Despite repeated denials by Dallas owner Jerry Jones, who says he is pleased with effort of incumbent starter Tony Romo, the Cowboys are another team rumored to be looking to acquire a quarterback, either in the draft or in free agency. Only time will tell if Jones is being serious or just setting up a smokescreen.
