Nascar Evaluating Severe Weather Procedures After Pocono Storm Kills 1, Injures 9 Fans Nascar has decided to work with tracks across the country to come up with a safety plan to allow fans to get to their cars quickly in the wake of tragedy Sunday at Pocono Raceway. Brian Zimmerman, a 41-year-old NASCAR fan from Pennsylvania, was killed by a lightning strike approximately seven minutes after the Pennsylvania 400 was stopped because of rain. Eight others were injured in that lightning strike. Another fan was injured from a bolt of lightning about 90 minutes later. Nascar controls when races stop and restart and the decided to keep running the cars under caution after lightening strikes were visible from the grandstands in turn 3. Jeff Gordon was declared the winner after 98 of 160 laps. “It’s a balancing act, but there’s no doubt that the first and foremost priority is the safety—far and above the actual racing and trying to get the race in,” NASCAR spokesman David Higdon said Monday...
