20/20 HINDSIGHT.

TWENTY-TWO days ago I wrote this:

HOPEFULLY WE'RE ALL IDIOTS.

NOW it has come to this.

I'm an Eagles fan, but I'm not excited. I'll root for them of course, but I'll have to hope that I'm wrong the whole time.

Already people are scratching their heads over this. Walt at Walterfootball.com graded this hire at a C-. (http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2013recap.php ) Heath Evans has gone on record calling this one of the worst hires in pro football history.

HISTORY.

Evans ranks this hiring as worse than the Steve Spurrier hire ( http://on.nfl.com/KellyReax ). And the worst part is, I agree with him.

CBS Sports is already shaking their collective head, squinting and setting their mouth up to say "I told you so", ( http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/blog/eye-on-football/21563687/chip-kelly-will-be-most-scrutinized-nfl-coach-weve-seen-in-long-time ) before the ink on Kelly's contract has even dried. And they even managed to get in a swipe at the fans.

I hope I'm wrong. I swear I do. In fact I hope most of us are wrong.

I caught hell for writing this.

22 days later we have Pat Shurmur, Billy Davis and maybe another season with Michael Vick as your starter.

I wonder, how does everyone feel about the hire NOW?

  • I was never thrilled about the Kelly signing. I wanted a defensive coach to take over a head coach as that seems to be the biggest problem with the eagles. Not to mention, as we saw from the superbowl, teams with strong defenses win championships. an offensive coordinator would have been easy to lure in as the only big need on that side of the ball is a franchise qb to lead the team into the future.
  • And now we've missed the boat for at least the next 3 years.

    Unless Kelly quits first.
  • or his staffing moves stun everyone and turn out to be genius
  • Now wait a minute! You lost me here.

You want Foles over Vick because Vick has been ineffective over the last two years; but you're willing to grant faith to a staff on which the DC has proven to be downright awful, and the OC has a track record of never coaching a unit that finished higher than 26th in either points or yards while he was an OC.

    I'm lost.
  • As far as i can see we don't have any other choice for OC or DC. Lets be honest Chip Kelly is the OC. I didnt say I liked the coaching move because i dont. I've said i would have much rather had a defensive minded head coach. I also think our current defensive roster made it impossible for Kelly to make a decent hire because from the past two season this unit is built to fail.
  • I have to agree I don't think that we had much in the way of choices here. But with us seeing this for what it is, come on, isn't it pushing it to say that if it works out his hires were genius.

I know history would spin it that way, but as men, aren't we supposed to call it like we see it, and even if we turn out to be wrong, own the fact that we called it that way?

I may be wrong about this, but I'm willing to go on record with it and call this bad string of hires a bad string of hires.
  • as am i... i was just pointing out what you said that if it works out he'll be seen as a genius
  • That I did. It's sad that it works that way, isn't it. It's sad most people can't recognize genius on it's own merit. It's Charles Goodyear all over again.
  • thats why i'd be much happier just calling this a rebuilding year rather then putting expectations of .500 or better on this staff.
  • Defense wins championships. Hmm..not sure that statement rings entirely true. Even thought the 49ers were dominant at times this year, the Ravens were average at best. The final Superbowl score should be an indication of just how well "Defense wins Championships". The game has moved to a more offensive game (spread/pistol) and Kelly is regarded as a "genius" when it comes to maximizing the potential of his team (esp when it comes to the offensive side of the ball).

Kelly didn't want to hire a bunch of "like minded" people. He wants creative input from different perspectives (both Shurmer and Davis have many years experience in the NFL). Chip will obviously be responsible for the entire team. And perhaps some of his "risky" hires might be the right chemistry in building a winning organization.

The jury is still out on what he wants to do at QB. But given that Reid wanted to make Vick a drop back/5-7 step/west coast passer (which he is obviously not) perhaps Kelly can unleash the player from 2010 when Vick didn't have strict "rules" to conform to. Dennis Dixon might be the insurance plan as someone who can run a similar type of offense (without having to change an entire game plan). Don't be surprised if the Eagles also draft a player who will also be put in this role. E.J. Manuel anyone? Hmm..maybe. Could Foles be traded to the Chiefs? Or any other QB needy team? Who knows. This off season looks to be anything but boring. That much is for sure.
  • FAST FORWARD NEARLY FIVE MONTHS:
    The players came in ill-prepared.
The Defense had to be installed three times in three weeks.
Practices had to be slowed because the roster (not one or two guys), weren't grasping the concepts.
There is no pecking order at the teams key position.

Yet you all still say you're thrilled.

I'll update this again (more frequently) as things continue to develop, but whether you can see it or not, there is a DEFINITE pattern, leading to a definite result.
