SEATTLE | Utilityman Willie Bloomquist anticipated “a chaotic weekend” as he returned for the first time to Safeco Field since ending his 10-year association with the Mariners. “It will be good to see some family, I guess,” he said. “But I’ll be happy when the weekend is over. I just don’t want to make a big deal out of it. I know some people are excited that I’m coming back — and that’s nice — but I still have a job to do.

A Greinke Thought
Joe Posnanski makes many good points about why Zack Greinke is the best pitcher in the game today, but this one drove the point home for me:
He never gets to face the Royals lineup.
So he never gets a chance at an easy shutout.

Greinke-ganda
For today, let's forget that the defense playing behind Zack Greinke is the worst in the American League.

* If you'll pardon the imperfect analogy, that's the difference...
BLS poll: Which pitcher is the frontrunner for AL Cy Young?
There was a time when we thought the Dodgers would win the NL West by the start of September, the Cubs would back into a messy NL Central title and that the AL Cy Young race would be a two-horse race between Zack and Roy. Needless to say, there's a reason why they play the rest of the schedule. The Dodgers have been challenged by the Rockies, the Cubs have absolutely collapsed and...

Mike Jacobs will take the signs where he can get them, and Wednesday morning, he got another one: seeing his name in the starting lineup against a left-handed starter for the first time July 3.
M's sweep A's, brace themselves for the mighty Royals
The schedule has become the Mariners' friend. After coming back from their last road trip to Detroit and Cleveland with a 2-4 record, giving them seven losses in their last 10 games, the M's had dropped to 63-61 and were reeling.
With a bad homestand, they could have dropped under .500. In the worst-case scenario, if the A's had swept them, Oakland would have crept within...
