Game One Hundred Fifty-Two - Cubs 3 Giants 2
WP - Aaron Heilman (4-4) LP - Brian Wilson (5-6, BS 7) Save - Carlos Marmol (15)
The Chicago Cubs were on the brink of officially being eliminated late Thursday night in San Francisco. Brad Penny had out dueled Ryan Dempster for eight innings and the Cubs only run scored on a 4-6-3 double play off the bat of Jeff Baker in the fourth inning.
With the Giants up 2-1, Derrek Lee led off the ninth with a walk against Giants' closer Brian Wilson. Micah Hoffpauir and Mike Fontenot both swung at the first pitch and popped out to the left side of the infield. Jeff Baker stepped to the plate representing the Cubs last chance of the night.
Derrek Lee stole second base on the first pitch to Jeff Baker ... Lee's first stolen base and attempt of the entire season. Baker swung and missed at Wilson's next offering then laid off two sliders to run the count to 2-2 with the tying run on second.

One Cub Quietly Having A Great Season
Funny story; I was checking just how many major leaguers this year have a higher slugging percentage than Orioles' back-up shortstop Robert Andino's OPS (.556) - there are 11 of the them by the way - and saw that one of them is Derrek Lee. The Cubbies first-baseman is slugging .593 as part of a .310/.394/.593 line and has 35 home runs. Lee hasn't showed that kind of power...
Derrek Lee Injured by Celebratory Helmet Slap
There is never a dull moment when you are a player or a fan of the Chicago Cubs. The latest crazy moment features first baseman Derrek Lee, relief pitcher Angel Guzman, a batting helmet and a celebratory helmet slap.
On Thursday, Lee scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth inning after Jeff Baker hit a homer with two outs to give the Cubs the lead over the San Francisco...
Game Recap: Cubs 3, Giants 2
Jeff Baker is looking like a hell of a pick up by Jim Hendry. It was his bat -- and his bat alone -- that lifted the Cubs to victory last night in a game dominated by pitching.
Ryan Dempster went 7 innings and allowed only 2 runs, but Brad Penny was even more effective. The only runs the Cubs scored in the first 8 came from a double play ball -- hit by Baker -- after...
Cubs Futility Continues
I don’t even know what to say about this, I guess I just felt the need to share the sad sad state of affairs. As the Cubs try to go 7-3 down the stretch to avoid a sub-.500 decade (h/t: @NearlyNextYear), things just continue to unravel. Derrek Lee scored the game-tying run ahead of Jeff [...]

CUBS IN BRIEF: Guzman's love pat worsens Lee's neck
SAN FRANCISCO -- The dugout has become almost as treacherous as the field for Cub injuries this season, with Derrek Lee the latest to fall victim when he aggravated a neck injury getting a congratulatory whack on the helmet after scoring a run Thursday night in San Francisco.
Who is this player?
These numbers are prior to 2009.
Derrek Lee: 23.9 WAR, 6199 PA
Aramis Ramirez: 21.1 WAR, 5421 PA
Alfonso Soriano: 21.4 WAR, 5294 PA
Player A: 29.2 WAR, 5242 PA
Who is Player A?
MO answered it correctly and he was as surprised as I was. The player is Placido Polanco. Polanco made only $4.6 million annually from 2006 to 2009. He’s a free agent after this season and can...
Baker's homer stuns Giants
Jeff Baker hit a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning and the Chicago Cubs staved off playoff elimination for a day by handing the San Francisco Giants a blow to their postseason hopes with 3-2 victory Thursday night.
Cubs hanging in there
SAN FRANCISCO — Jeff Baker was a little leery of facing San Francisco closer Brian Wilson. After all, in three previous at-bats against Wilson, Baker had struck out.

Game Recap: Cubs 7, Brewers 2
(with the graphic hopefully coming soon)In yesterday's GameCast, I wrote that a gassed-out Randy Wells might "get lit up tonight worse than a bum with a fresh bottle of anti-freeze at hand." Wells responded by pitching 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, walking 0, and striking out 5 while surrendering only 1 earned run.
Wells now looks certain to finish the year with...
