People have wondered why, with the Phillies still within sight of the Mets in the N.L. East with plenty of time to go in the season, I can't just enjoy the ride. It's because the Mets clubhouse shop doesn't sell Brooklyn Dodgers throwback edition crash helmets.Believe me, there's nothing I want more than to be positive, and look at the glass as being half full (of good strong Vodka of course.) But if you still think this season can be salvaged, and you're entitled to think that way, ask yourself: What have you seen from this team, not the struggles of the Phillies or the Marlins' bullpen or the Braves, but from the New York Mets, that tell you that this is a team that has a legitimate shot at winning this division? Where's the evidence on the field?Because here's reality: The fourth inning on Tuesday, where Johan Santana walked the pitcher, Fernando Martinez dug up a divot in center field the size of Bobby Bonilla's severance paycheck while letting...

Who Is Fernando Nieve?
Who is Fernando Nieve?I’ll tell you… he’s one of Omar’s “Diamonds In The Rough”.

Is It Impossible for the Met Fans to Be Realistic?
I listen to New York's Major Sports talk radio stations daily and each and every time I am amazed by the delusional Met fans that call up the station complaining about how their team isn't winning and how they're falling out of the race. To which the obvious response is, "What the hell did you think was going to happen when half your team got injured?", yet...
Beltran’s Wounded Knee Won’t Need Amputation
Nice catch, Fernando. The New York Mets have finally gotten some good news. The second opinion (from Dr. Richard Steadman) on Carlos Beltran's hurt knee was the same as the Mets’ medical staff: no surgery required. The Gold Glove center fielder will be re-evaluated later on this week and will most likely still be resting the bone bruise through the All-Star break. Beltran had...

New York Mets injuries put heavy burden on third baseman David Wright
William Perlman/The Star-LedgerWith so many injuries to key players, the Mets are relying increasingly on David Wright for offense. MILWAUKEE -- David Wright doesn't even have to check anymore. He'll find out where he is hitting sooner or later. Third,...
Insults to Injuries
A grim exercise, for posterity: With one out in the Brewers' fourth, Johan Santana walked a 29-year-old journeyman starting pitcher. He got Corey Hart to fly to center, but Fernando Martinez fell down, literally landing on his face to put runners on second and third. Santana walked J.J. Hardy and went to an 0-2 count on Ryan Braun ... to whom Johan then threw a meatball. The ball...
MLB Notebook: Beltran will return after All-Star break
Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran's second examination on his ailing right knee also indicates surgery is not required. The opinion from Dr.
David Wright shakes off criticism from ex-New York Met John Franco
The New York Mets already are riddled with injuries and struggling to win. Now former teammate John Franco is piling on -- but Mets third baseman David Wright said that's the least of the team's problems.
Carlos Beltran seeks doctor's opinion, is told he doesn't need surgery. Beltran seeks second opinion, is told he's ugly, too
