by Tom FornelliFiled under: Phillies, NL East, MLB Media Watch, MLB Rumors, MLB PEDsWhen the Phillies signed Raul Ibanez to a three-year $30 million deal this past offseason there were quite a few people skeptical of giving a then 36-year old (Raul turned 37 last week) outfielder $10 million for three years. Especially when we all saw how much other free agent outfielders ended up getting elsewhere. Plus there was the fact that at 36 years old, no matter how well he's played, he has to start declining at some point.Well that decline is yet to start. Ibanez is hitting .327 with 20 homers and 55 RBI for the Phillies this year, exceeding just about anybody's expectations. Of course, given the culture of today's game in which we seemingly find out about a new superstar using steroids (though not raping or killing anybody) when you see Ibanez putting up these numbers, it's only natural to be somewhat suspicious.Ibanez Responds to Blog's Steroid Talk originally appeared on Fanhouse MLB Bl...

Ibanez doesnt use steroids. He is just a professional hitter, has a good swing, and keeps himself in shape by practicing brazilian jiu jitsu. He is a good athlete and a good baseball player.

Amen phillyfan, some people should just quit while they're behind.

Ibanez is my new hero. I don't care what he does as long as he continues to crush the Mets. Seriously he seems like a stand up guy and I don't think he has done anything wrong, but in today's environment people question everything.

Raul Ibanez fighting mad at blogger
Suppose it was only a matter of time before it came down to this. A blogger posting on the Midwest Sports Fans site (the site's "managing editor'' no less) made an offhand suggestion that Raul Ibanez could be taking performance enhancing drugs. He then actually tried to make a case for it.
Only problem is, there was no proof. And Ibanez is furious about it.

Man, Some Sports Journalists Still Don’t Get the Web
Media Musings, Raul Ibanez Edition: There’s too much to block quote here, so you’ll just have to read it all. “Most of all, I hope they learned that if you’re going to try to be a big man, or woman, and go after big game, you’ve got to have your ducks lined up. Because these [...]
Raul Ibanez of Philadelphia Phillies rips blogger for performance-enhancing drugs speculation
Raul Ibanez of the Phillies is bristling at the suggestion in a blog that his offensive numbers could be the result of performance-enhancing drugs. And he's perfectly willing to be drug-tested to prove it.
Steroids, blogging, and baseball
For those of you who haven't heard, there's been a buzz around baseball media circles over the past week after Jerod Morris of Midwestsportsfans.com wrote the following article regarding the hot start of Raul Ibanez in Philadelphia. "In fact, the 37-year old Ibanez has been so good that it has led to the inevitable speculation that his improvement may be attributable to factors other...

A Hank Size Hit, Baa!
Maybe the whole Jerod Morris/John Gonzalez thing was all an elaborate rouse to get Raul Ibanez mad enough to smack a Ken Takahashi pitch five miles over the right field fence to break the Mets hearts ... again ... in extra innings.Nah, considering how much Takahashi missed his target by, Mary Poppins would have hit that pitch over the fence. So mad has nothing to do with it.But jeez...
What’s eating Raul?
Raul Ibanez is one of my favorite people in baseball. We can start there. His oldest son Raul Jr. was born one day before our oldest daughter Elizabeth, and we exchanged little gifts for the kids once or twice. We talked often about playing chess against each other — never have, but we talk about [...]

Commentary: This Round Smells Off
Welcome to Phillies-Mets, Version 3. But it’s more like Version 2, as the original Versions 1 and 2 were just two games each. Not really enough, eh?
It’s June 9 and the rivals will tussle again. Currently the Mets have hit 34 home runs. And Raul Ibanez and Ryan Howard together have hit 36 home runs. [...]
Philly rocks the vote
Jimmy Rollins and Raul Ibanez are now atop the NL voting leaderboard. Still whining about it being only this year’s best players with Rollins pretty much sucking it up this year? He’s batting 0.222 with just 3 HR and 10 SB. The third 2009 National League balloting update for Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game, to be held July 14 in St. Louis, was released Monday and two...
