I've made it through the first half of rehab/detox. Not to get all self-congratulatory, but I'm pretty damn proud of myself. No Mets viewing in over a week. During this stretch, my beloved not-so-amazins have compiled an enviable 4-6 record with a collection of triple-A plus talent.Last night, they took the stage on national TV against Pujols and the Cards sans Beltran and somehow managed to win. Apparently, Brian Stokes pitched well coaxing a big double-play groundout from Sir Albert. Funny, I was sure Jerry had forgotten about Stokes due to the fact that he goes after hitters and manages to perform adequately most of the time. Usually those guys get banished to inactivity or shipped to the minors in favor of stalwarts like Takahashi. Curious...

Expect a Argenis Reyes call-up...

The last time the Mets needed a middle infielder, when Ramon Martinez went down, Argenis Reyes was on the minor league disabled list, so Omar went out and obtained Wilson Valdez. It now appears the Mets are hoping to stow Valdez back in AAA as an insurance plan, if he makes it through waivers and accepts assignment. Jerry Manuel hinted that the pitchers promoted ( Dessens/Misch) were...

Mets Adopt the Junkyard Dog’s Theme Song as their Own

The Mets beat St. Louis 6-4 last night, but enough of that happy talk. This is the Mets so of course we have much more ominous news to unravel as another star bit the dust in Flushing. Carlos Beltran was the latest, and in my mind the most irreplaceable, player to join the MASH Unit that is the New [...]

The End Of Tatis

It is time for the Mets to say good-bye to Fernando Tatis. He is showing his old swing that kept him out of baseball for two years. It seems as though he either strikes out or hits into a double...

Mets DFA Wilson Valdez

Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that the Mets designated Wilson Valdez for assignment to make room for pitchers Elmer Dessens and Pat Misch. The roster shuffle comes partially because Carlos Beltran is headed for the DL. In 26 plate appearances for the Mets, Valdez hit .208/.269/.333. The 31-year-old played both middle infield positions.

Mets put Beltran on DL

Carlos Beltran is going on the disabled list, an enormous blow to a struggling New York Mets team already decimated by key injuries.

New York Mets lineup is set; no Gary Sheffield for third straight game

William Perlman/The Star-LedgerGary Sheffield will miss his third straight game on Wednesday. For the third consecutive game and fourth out of the last five, Gary Sheffield will not be in the Mets lineup. Sheffield received a cortisone shot for his...

Throwback

Well, it's official. With the news that Carlos Beltran is now on the disabled list, joining his friends Jose Reyes and Carlos Delgado, the offense will be more of a 19th century offense. It was a simpler time where home runs came at a premium due to the fact that everyone was smaller and, as seen from the photo above, there were no walls.Citi Field has walls but you have to take...

Jose Reyes Gets Rear-Ended By Enormous Red Machine

At this point, there are very few calamities that could befall the New York Mets that are outrageous enough to cause me to question their veracity. In other words, the Mets can't stop stepping in dogshit. The latest incident involves already-injured shortstop Jose Reyes, a firetruck, and some hot rear-ending action that the Mets tried oh-so-hard to keep under wraps. Seems that...

Jays' Marco Scutaro Steals Second On A Walk

Marco Scutaro made Jimmy Rollins, Joe Blanton, Chase Utley and basically the rest of the Philadelphia Phillies roster look foolish during the third inning last Thursday. Scutaro drew a walk from Blanton, a routine play that normally sees the play take his base without much in the way of pomp and circumstance. But Scutaro, seeing a Phillies infield that seemed asleep at the wheel...

Slideshow: St. Louis Cardinals 3, New York Mets 0

Michael Heiman/Getty ImagesDavid Wright is hit by a pitch. The injury-riddled Mets have lost nine of their last 13 and got shut out by the Cardinals' Joel Pineiro Tuesday night. Pineiro himself picked up two hits while limiting the Mets...

The Mets Need Scott Hairston

It's true. They need a center fielder that can hit lefties, and that's Scott Hairston. Or Jason Michaels. And those guys will cost a lot less than players like Aubrey Huff and Nick Johnson, who might be useless once Carlos Delgado returns.

Ailing Mets slow Pujols, beat Cardinals 6-4

Tim Redding pitched into the eighth inning for his first win with the Mets and substitute setup man Brian Stokes got Albert Pujols to ground into a crucial double play, leading New York past the St. Louis Cardinals 6-4 on Monday night.
