Progress Has Been a Mixed Bag

(by Jeff Bergin) Okay, this season is weird. Last year, the Nationals performance was terrible across nearly every measurable statistic en route to a 59-102 record. This year, the Nationals have been sub-par again, but worse, they are wildly inconsistent. At times, this team has pieces of the team that keep them competitive and offer glimmers of hope, only to be let down by those...

Tragedy of Errors

Nationals Enquirer wonders what other new ways the Nationals will find to lose: Just when you think you’ve seen everything…and the scary thing is, with another 81 games to go, they may yet invent new ways to lose. Julian Tavarez deservedly takes the loss, walking two in the 8th; LA Joe Beimel botches easy DP ball by [...]

Small things add up in Nationals' loss

DENVER | The strangest thing about this Washington Nationals loss, their 57th of the season and one of the most notable in terms of sheer goofiness? Cristian Guzman's seventh-inning error, a play on which a ball shot under his backhand attempt, off his foot and into the outfield as the shortstop stood frozen, didn't even produce the Colorado Rockies' winning run. No,...

Lannan struggles as Nationals fall

HOUSTON | There's not likely to be a better chance for the Washington Nationals to turn around this road trip, which began with two one-run losses and an afternoon thumping, than the one they got Thursday night. A win had come their way in the conclusion of a suspended game with the Houston Astros via the kind of porous defense they usually bestow on opponents. They had ace-in...

Rizzo: "Not Trading Dunn"

Dan Steinberg at the Washington Post has a transcript of Nationals GM Mike Rizzo's chat with ESPN Radio's Kevin Sheehan today. At first, Rizzo says Dunn is "not on the trading block," but then implies the Nationals would think about it if they were overwhelmed. So Sheehan lays it on the line:Sheehan: Do you understand that without a definitive statement on that...

Suspended game results in strategic nightmare, win

HOUSTON | Before the Washington Nationals took the field Thursday at Minute Maid Park, the usual handwritten lineup was posted on the clubhouse bulletin board. Instead of its normal crisp symmetry, the card had a mishmash of notations and substitutions. In the ninth spot in the batting order, there was simply a question mark. The convoluted lineup card was just one strange scene...

Morris Signs with Nationals

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former Kansas State right-handed pitcher A.J. Morris, who was drafted with the first pick of the fourth round of this year's MLB Draft by the Washington Nationals, has signed with the organization.

Good, Bad & Ugly: Errors Doom Nationals in Loss to Rockies, 5-4

"Which one?"—Manny Acta, in response to the question "How bad did Guzman's error hurt?" in the post-game conference, July 7, 2009.THE RESULT: The Washington Nationals lost a perfectly winnable game last night due to a veteran pitcher that couldn't throw a strike, infield errors too numerous to count, a backup outfielder falling down on the base paths...
