April 7, 2006: Brandon Phillips is traded by the Cleveland Indians to the Cincinnati Reds for . The Cincinnati Reds sent Jeff Stevens (minors) (June 13, 2006) to the Cleveland Indians to complete the trade. The Reds had played 2005 with 33 year old Rich Aurilia at second base. Aurilia hit well in 2005, batting .282 with 14 homers and a .782 OPS. Aurilia was granted free agency in October, and the Reds traded for speedster IF-OF Tony Womack as a 2b candidate for 2006. Womack was coming off a less than stellar 2005 season with the Yankees where he hit .249 with no homers, 27 steals, and a .556 OPS. Aurilia was eventually re-signed in January, 2006, but the Reds had decided that wanted the former all-star shortstop to play a fulltime “utility role” in 2006, backing up young third baseman Edwin Encarnacion and playing all the infield positions. The Reds also included Ryan Freel in competition for 2b. Freel had started 103 games in a utility role in 2005, 48 of them ...

Reds Stuck With Harang

With each day that passes it looks like the Cincinnati Reds will be stuck with pitcher Aaron Harang. The starter cleared waivers and can now be traded to any team in the league, but they’re receiving no interest. Not too surprising. Harang’s line for the year is 6-13 (league leader in losses), [...]

Create-a-Caption: Bronson is fixing to be a lot better, man

Before Bronson Arroyo puts in another order for "Korean ginseng", he should probably note that his two-hit complete game shutout on Thursday night came not as a result of his pharmacy of non-approved supplements, but because he was facing the Nationals. I mean, even Jonny Gomes managed to hit three home run against those guys! (Amirite?)  So have at it, amateur Internet copy editors...

Gomes crushes three homers to power Reds

Jonny Gomes homered in his first three at-bats to back Bronson Arroyo's two-hitter and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals 7-0 on Thursday night.

In The Spotlight

Tom mentioned it below in DOTF, but I just had to take a second to highlight a bit further what turned out to be a good night in the minors for Redleg Nation. Two of our Spotlight Players had great nights that deserve to be applauded, especially since these guys have been so generous in sharing their time with RN. First, Matt Klinker earned his first win as a AAA pitcher. Klinker...

Arroyo hasn't heard from MLB about supplements

If Major League Baseball wants to talk with Cincinnati Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo about the supplements he takes, he doesn't know about it.

Gomes goes off for three homers

Jonny Gomes homered in his first three at-bats to back Bronson Arroyo's two-hitter and the Cincinnati Reds beat the Washington Nationals 7-0 on Thursday night.

Odds & Ends: Draft Signings, Reds, Marlins

News on draft signings is picking up--let's take a look: Joe Smith at the St. Petersburg Times says the Rays have signed their fifth-round pick, 1B Jeff Malm. The Rays also came to terms with their ninth-round pick, LHP Kevin James, for a $625k bonus, says Jim Callis at Baseball America. John Fay at the Cincinnati Enquirer believes the Reds' recent moves...

Reds ship shortstop Gonzalez to BoSox for prospect

The Cincinnati Reds have traded shortstop Alex Gonzalez to the Boston Red Sox for a minor leaguer.

Why Isn't The Austin Kearns Experiment Ending?

In a crowded Washington Nationals outfield, Kearns doesn't fit in. The oft-injured 29-year-old was acquired by the Nats in 2006, and since then, Kearns has been hitting .240 with 36 home runs and 159 RBI. Not the numbers the Nationals expected. With an outfield filled up with Josh Willingham, Nyjer Morgan, Elijah Dukes and Willie Harris, there seems to be no room for Kearns. Compare...

Giants IF Rich Aurilia goes on DL to clear roster room for return of Schierholtz

Aurilia goes on disabled list

Rich Aurilia started the Giants' six-day homestand by coming off the disabled list and finished it by returning to the DL, with outfielder Nate Schierholtz taking his place on the roster.

Aurilia back on DL to make room for Schierholtz

Infielder Rich Aurilia went back on the San Francisco Giants' 15-day disabled list Wednesday so they could activate outfielder Nate Schierholtz from the DL.
