Why do people hate Kevin Gregg? I mean, beside the Sling Blade stare and half-wit, Special Olympics goggles the guy's been really good. To the tune of 19 saves in 22 chances. Over the year, he's been a rock solid reliever for the Cubs. In 45 2/3 IP, he's chiseled down his ERA to a nice 3.15 with a 1.226 WHIP. But let's look a little deeper, shall we? In June, Gregg really started to pitch well. In 13.0 IP, he posted a nice 2.77 ERA with 5 SV, a 0.846 WHIP, 0.163 BAA, and 11/3 K/BB. Want more Gregg sexy time? In July, he's thrown up a sick 0.79 ERA in 11.1 IP, 6 SV (two of which were more than 1 IP), 0.794 WHIP, 0.154 BAA, and 9/3 K/BB. I know Gregg's not the sexy guy in the bullpen to love. But I'll be damn if I'll let that stand in my way. I hated him at first. No mas. One more thing: Since the end of May, the NL Central looks like this: Houston                 31-19Chicago                 25-22St. Louis                23-27Milwaukee              21-27Cincinnati               18-30 In July: Houston                 13-6Chicago                 12-7Saint Louis             10-8Cincinnati                7-12Pittsburgh                6-12Milwaukee               6-12

Notes: Moyer's performance polarizes peanut gallery

Critics argue that 46-year-old Jamie Moyer's performance is worse than pitchers like Adam Eaton and Kyle Kendrick, who were ousted from the rotation in 2008. Defenders call those comparisons unfair and point toward steady improvements since the start of the season. "Adam Eaton : Last pitched July 27th, with a 5.80 ERA. Jamie Moyer : At July 22nd, has a 5.65 ERA. He has rebounded...

Chicago Cubs Quick Hits: Lilly, Dempster and Ryan

According to Chicago Tribune writer Paul Sullivan, the Cubs’ lone All-Star is likely heading to the disabled list. “Oh gosh, we were just talking about getting [ Ryan] Dempster back,” manager Lou Piniella said. “We were happy about that, and all of a sudden, the Lilly situation [comes up]. It seems like every time we get [...]

Chicago Cubs Pitcher Ted Lilly to DL

According to David Kaplan, Chicago TV and radio broadcaster, Chicago Cubs pitcher Ted Lilly is headed to the DL. He had some insight into Lilly's arthrogram that took place on Friday. Lilly, the team's only all-star, was putting up great numbers throughout the season. This will likely be a huge blow to the Cubs, who are all ready in catch-up mode. Kevin Hart has already...

Lying Liars and the Lies They Tell

The Cub blogosphere was all abuzz around the 4th inning with rumor it now appears was a pure fiction, created by Former Playgirl Model Steve Stone and Mark Derosa Restraining Order recipient David Kaplan.  The Former Playgirl Model tweeted that Detroit was interested in acquiring Milton Bradley.  (We would’ve linked to the Former Playgirl Model’s tweets, but he has protected...

Cubs manager Lou Piniella has said he's comfortable with his bench and especially the play of Jake Fox in a variety of roles. But more offense remains on his wish list as the non-waiver trade deadline nears.

DW's Thought Of The Week: Does Sanchez Make Sense For The Chicago Cubs

So I was looking around for any trade news that I could find on the Chicago Cubs, and there was nothing of interest. There were some quotes from the Chicago Sun Times saying the Cubs have financial flexibility to make some moves at the deadline. Browsing the general section, I noticed Freddy Sanchez being linked with the Mariners and several other teams, but there is no mention of...
