The November installment of the GM meetings started yesterday and as expected not much went down. The real fun is at the December GM meetings. So if you're expecting some juicy stuff this week, you're going to be let down. The "big news" yesterday was that both Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui filed for free agency. Nobody should be surprised by this. The Yankees have a small window to negotiate with them exclusively before other teams can enter the mix. I believe that window closes on the 19th and I'd be surprised if the Yankees do anything with them before the deadline. There's a lot of question/debate going on as to whether the Yankees should bring back these guys back. A lot of people seem to think that they will sign one of them, but not both. Most people seem to think Damon will be the one returning. I see positives to bringing both back, but I don't see it happening. I think it's possible that neither return. If you put me on the spot a...

Yankees Could Keep Pettitte, Damon, Matsui

After months of talk that the Yankees would only keep one of Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui, Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the World Champions will try to re-sign both players, plus Andy Pettitte. The Yankees are more intent on retaining their own free agents than they are on acquiring Matt Holliday, Jason Bay or John Lackey. Yankees GM Brian Cashman would prefer...

Yankees Notes: Damon, Matsui, Chapman

In his recap of the third day of the GM meetings, Lohud.com's Chad Jennings has a few quotes from New York GM Brian Cashman that hint at the Yankees' upcoming moves. Here are the highlights: When asked about retaining both Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon, Cashman says: “If I did that I wouldn’t have room for anybody else unless I made trades." Cashman seems to be referring...

Lohud.com - Jenning: Cashman uses GM meetings to gather info

Of the seven Yankees eligible for free agency, six have already filed. Andy Pettitte has yet to make it official but Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Jose Molina, Eric Hinske, Jerry Hairston Jr. and Xavier Nady have filed, and the Yankees have eight more days of exclusive rights to negotiate a deal with them for next season. After that, free agents are free to negotiate with any team...

Damon pursuing Jeter-like payday

CHICAGO — We now return to the business portion of the program. The Yankees were hoping all the joy associated with being a champion Yankee would motivate Johnny Damon to accept a one- or, at the most, two-year deal to return. However, his representa...

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui became a free agent Monday along with New York Yankees teammates Johnny Damon, Eric Hinske, Jose Molina and Xavier Nady.

Will The Yanks Go After Bay Or Holliday?

With all the controversy surrounding weather to bring back Johnny Damon or Hideki Matsui, many fans have brought up the idea of signing outfielders Matt Holliday or Jason Bay. To me, when you win a championship, you shouldn't really try to change your team all that much, unless there's a guy like Mark Teixeira or CC Sabathia out there on the market, which this year, there...

What Made Headline

Tim Dierkes over at MLB Trade Rumors came out with his list of the top 50 MLB free agents in this year's FA class. He also listed the team he believes that player will sign with. As far as current Yankees are concerned he ranks Andy Pettitte 6th and believe he'll remain in the Bronx. The same goes for Johnny Damon, who he ranked 12th. He believes Hideki Matsui, who was ranked 27th...

Outfielder Johnny Damon and designated hitter Hideki Matsui, keys to the New York Yankees' World Series victory, were among the 31 players to file for free agency Monday.

Boras Says Sox Had Chance To Sign Teixeira, Then Compares Damon To Jeter

Scott Boras has got to be the most unpopular man in all of baseball...actually in all of sports. First he compares his client Johnny Damon to Derek Jeter. Then he goes on to say that the Red Sox had a chance to sign Mark Teixeira and blew it...Read the full article on Bleacher Report...

Yankees plotting to keep Damon, Pettitte, Matsui

CHICAGO -- The Yankees are strategizing ways to retain all three of their major free agents -- Johnny Damon, Andy Pettitte and Hideki Matsui -- sources told The Post. Damon and Pettitte are the priorities. But when asked if that meant Matsui had p...

Nostalgia vs. Common Sense

One of the biggest surprises to me during the GM meetings is the belief the Yankees will attempt to keep Johnny Damon, Andy Pettitte, and Hideki Matsui versus focusing on Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, and John Lackey. To me that’s the wrong move because it is predicated on nostalgia of the past versus objectively analyzing [...]
