Hey, Phil, how about you remind us again how the Cubs are going to regret letting Mark Prior go?Yes, the man who said yesterday that the Cubs should release one of the most productive pitchers in baseball also said they should have kept one of the least productive pitchers in baseball.(Nothing against Mark Prior, but he was and is broken.)As a reminder, here's what Phil had to say on Feb. 18, 2008:I have been in the minority of those who felt the Cubs made a mistake by cutting their ties to Prior in December. Those feelings are even stronger now.If Prior can get himself right, he has the potential to fill one of the team's biggest needs -- a No. 2 starter behind Carlos Zambrano. The Cubs could have invested another $3 million in Prior -- and, yes, hundreds of man hours by trainers and coaches -- and given themselves the possibility that he could follow Zambrano in a playoff rotation. General Manager Jim Hendry picked the exit ramp instead, and this could prove to be a very bad decision, even if Prior was going to leave as a free agent after 2008.So, to recap: Get rid of Z. Keep Prior. Got it. Keep stealing that Trib money, Phil.

Z Pays You No Mind

Carlos Zambrano doesn't much care what you think: PITTSBURGH -- Carlos Zambrano had some fun with an unscientific Tribune fan poll in which 57.2 percent of respondents said he should be moved, as Phil Rogers suggested in a column Monday. "Fine, trade me to Boston," Zambrano said. Last weekend Zambrano said he would play for only two other teams than the Cubs -- Boston and the...

Phil Rogers, Still Wrong About Everything

Yes, this is a sterling idea, Phil: Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He's not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at this point, it's wishful thinking that he'll ever mature into that guy.Proving that I did not attend Kellogg, Wharton or even the Acme School of Business, I offer this proposition for Jim Hendry: First thing...

Rogers: Cubs should give Zambrano the boot

Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune is fed up with Cubs’ starter Carlos Zambrano and thinks the club should drop kick Big Z to the curb. Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He’s not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at [...]

It’s Not Zambrano, Phil, it’s the Offense (or Lack Thereof)

Carlos Zambrano: Columnists exist mostly to stir passions and make bold proclamations and drive radio chatter. This, from Phil Rogers, qualifies: “Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He’s not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and at this point, it’s wishful [...]

Phil Rogers Should be Replaced by a 32-year-old Blogger

As Lou Piniella was saying on Friday, enough’s enough. Alright! I love articles that start out with platitudes like this! Usually, they’re followed by shaky logic and over-reaching, knee-jerk reactions. Let’s see where this one goes… Get Carlos Zambrano out of here, even if the Cubs have to give him away. He’s not the guy you want as the ace of a curse-busting team, and...

Zambrano's response: Trade me to Boston

Carlos Zambrano had some fun with an unscientific Tribune fan poll in which 57.2 percent of respondents said he should be moved, as Phil Rogers suggested in a column Monday.

Great Moments in Selection Bias

Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune's Phil Rogers opined -- ridiculously, I noted -- that the Cubs should waive Carlos Zambrano. Tribune readers agree: Your team wants Carlos Zambrano? Go ahead, take him. That's what I proposed after Zambrano turned in another knuckleheaded performance on Sunday at U.S. Cellular Field. I suggested Cubs GM Jim Hendry put him on waivers and essentially...

Ozzie's Being Ozzie Again

by Tom FornelliFiled under: Cubs, White Sox, MLB FansThe White Sox and Cubs finished up their three-game series at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday with a 6-0 White Sox victory that came complete with another Carlos Zambrano meltdown to put the finishing touches on a very ugly weekend for the Cubs. Of course, never wanting to actually talk about what the real problems are with the...

Cubs won't win World Series until they clean house

This is not about a billy goat, a Bartman, or some new Century Club Curse hanging over the Chicago Cubs. Yes, the Cubs haven't won a World Series in over 100 years now, but it's no longer about a lack of talent or a propensity to choke. Everybody wants to bury the Mets this week for their underachieving ways, but at least their struggles can be largely related to their lineup that...

Odds & Ends: Nationals, Mets, Big Z

A roundup of links for a slow Monday evening in the baseball world... According to Chico Harlan of the Washington Post, the Nationals have agreed to terms with second-rounder Jeffrey Kobernus, a second baseman from the University of California.  He was handed a $705K signing bonus. Brewers prospect Jeremy Jeffres was suspended 100 games Monday for a second violation...
