-Disappointing loss for the Phillies, considering how good they’ve been at home for the last few postseasons. You had to figure though that the Yankees offense was going to bust out at least once in the series; there are too many good hitters in the line-up to average two runs a game for the series. -Still, Cole Hamels clearly just doesn’t have it right now. I’ve been harping all post season on the point that I don’t think the Phillies can win the whole thing unless Hamels pitches them to a victory at some point. Given how well Cliff Lee has pitched, and how excellent the Philadelphia line-up is, I’m not sure that’s still the case. However, how scared is every...

Are You Confident In Cole Hamels As A Game 7 Starter?

Cole Hamels was asked about his struggles this season and if he was looking forward to next season starting. His response was a bit of a head-shaker. "I can't wait for it to end. It's been mentally draining. But, you know what, it's one of those things, a year in, you just can't wait for a fresh start," Hamels said. Granted, he later added that "Game...

Game 3 pregame: Hamels must get back to basics

I don't profess to know the secret to being a successful major league pitcher, but there are a few common sense approaches Cole Hamels needs to follow tonight. We've all recognized Hamels' need for a third pitch, which isn't going to happen until the offseason. The Inquirer's Jim Salisbury wrote today that Hamels will work on adding a cutter or slider, in addition...

Nightmare on Citizens Bank Way, Phils Lose An Ugly Game Three at CBP

That one was rather frustrating. Cole Hamels looked dominant early but unraveled quickly after being squeezed on a would-be strike three to Mark Teixiera in the top of the fourth. A-Rod got the Yankees on the board with a questionable home run that hit off a camera hanging over the right field wall that some brilliant exec at FOX thought would be a great spot for it. Hamels came...

What to Expect from Andy Pettitte

World Series Game 3 in Philadelphia will feature a match-up between two southpaws, Cole Hamels and Andy Pettitte. A fair assessment of the pitchers reveals that Hamels has been much better than his statistics have shown and Pettitte has been slightly better, as the two have an xFIP (per The Hardball Times) of 3.75 and [...]

Former idol is Hamels' foe tonight

PHILADELPHIA — Cole Hamels grew up watching Andy Pettitte pitch important playoff games and still tries to imitate his icy glare on the mound.

Overexposed and Underconditioned

Chad Billingsley and Russell Martin aren't the only ones yearning for the glory days of 2008. Big League Stew brings us this surprisingly un-gritty comment from the Phillies' Cole Hamels after his Halloween-night shellacking: "I can't wait for it to end," Hamels said, referring to his wildly inconsistent 2009 season. "It's been mentally draining ...

Pettitte RBI may be Series turning point

1. If Game 3 is the turning point of the World Series -- 68 percent of teams up 2-1 go on to win it -- then a Yankees championship began with one pitch from Cole Hamels that will be remembered as one of the great gaffes in recent Series history. The beginning of the end for Philadelphia was a first-pitch curveball Hamels threw New York pitcher Andy Pettitte with no understanding...

LIVE: Yankees try to secure 27th World Series title

The Yankees are a win away from a 27th World Series title. Standing in their way is Cliff Lee. Can he continue his postseason brilliance and keep the Phillies alive? The Yankees lead 1-0.

Lee making Phillies forget they missed out on Halladay

The Phillies couldn't get the Blue Jays to trade them Roy Halladay, so they acquired Cliff Lee instead. After Lee beats New York again to keep Philly alive in the World Series, the Yankees are glad to be -- presumably -- done with him, Danny Knobler says.

Chase Utley, Cliff Lee help Phillies beat Yankees 8-6 and stave off World Series elimination

To A.J. Or Not to A.J.

Here's the million dollar question: Do you want A.J. Burnett starting game 5 over Chad Gaudin? I'm not sure myself. There are pros and cons to both and I'm not sure which side has better arguments. This decision could end up proving to be a colossal mistake. It could definitely end up biting the Yankees right in the rear. The lineup is likely going to be very weak tonight. The...

Gametracker: Yankees at Phillies

The Yankees try to finish the Phillies and capture a 27th World Championship. A.J. Burnett takes the mound tonight for the Yankees against Philadelphia's Game 1 hero: Cliff Lee. ...

Yankee nation smelled blood

PHILADELPHIA -- Yankee Nation moved in last night for the kill, risking the desperate Philadelphia resistance of Cliff Lee, thrown foodstuffs, profane insults, even physical threats. "This is too good," said Phil Robinson, business-tech marketer, ...
