Adrian Peterson is arguably the most violent running back in the NFL, continually putting a hurt on would-be tacklers.

But that style might have to change with the NFL’s new helmet rule, which prohibits runners from lowering the crown of their helmets.

And the reigning MVP isn’t too happy about it.

“Sooner or later we’re going to be playing touch football,” a “frustrated” Peterson told KFAN. “That’s just the passion in me that said that and then the maturity in me said, you know what, it’s an okay rule because it protects players.”

While he’s resigned to the fact that the rule was put in place for safety, the Vikings’ All-World back thinks it’s geared too much toward defensive players.

“The one thing I do not like about the rule is they single it out towards running backs,” Peterson said. “From my point of view, when you’re looking at the defense and there’s 11 guys coming at you. There’s so many times that guys have came at me and lowered their helmet not with their facemask facing me. They just lowered their helmet and came in and dived at me, my legs and my knees.”

It’s important to note the rule will work both ways. That is, if a defensive player uses the crown of his helmet, he’ll be flagged, too. Peterson appears content with the league’s newest procedure if it’s indeed enforced unbiasedly.

“I’ll be more comfortable with it if they just spread the love and bring that over to the defensive side and make sure when those guys come in to attack us, that they’ve got their head up and face mask showing as well,” Peterson said. “And anytime that they have their helmet down, they get flagged just like they are putting on us. I’ll be satisfied if they do it that way.”

  • Do away with helmets and they won't lead with their heads. I always thought helmets led to more concussions anyway. Or maybe they should go back to the leather helmets of old. They were lighter and softer and weren't hard projectiles.
  • Might as well change it to the NFFL. National Flag Football League.
  • Next rule coming down is pink shoelaces for the queers now suiting up
  • LOL!!! Yer gonna get hate mail for that one! LOL!!!
  • Of course he and others like matt forte are upset about it, it will cut their production numbers down, they don't care about the safety of others involved as long as they look like stars
  • Blah, blah, blah. If he does not like it, quit football and go do something he is mentally capable of doing.......washing cars and walking dogs.
  • I'd be willing to bet quite a bit that his multiply concussed IQ is still 30-40 points higher than yours. Either way, he's at least $100 million richer than you.
  • at least his little brain will be protected in his pants.
  • I was taught to play football in Pittsburgh as a young boy. You are telling a loyal Steeler fan that grew up with football as a physical sport, that flag football would be best for anyone. These football players make millions of dollars, I think they could get insurance for things like this. Just like we get life insurance, so can the players. To the Rooney family I remember the first Super Bowl win over Vikings and I was the proudest boy when Art Rooney lifted the football with a cigar in hand. I think your father would be very disappointed in your vote. So am I.
  • You can get insurance for things like this? So if you wind up with alzheimers or parkinsons or ALS at the age of 45, a few million dollars will make it aaaaallllllll better, eh?
