First Pitch: Navy SEALs Training…Only the Pirates…Plus a Ton of Other Teams

The Navy SEALs discussion is back. Dejan Kovacevic brought the topic up for the third time tonight, this time mentioning a possible injury by Gregory Polanco. I say possible, because there’s some conflicting information. Here is what Kovacevic had to say. Polanco’s ankle was sprained in mid-August, and it cost him most of his final month of play. But the Pirates still saw fit...

Pirates Claim Two Players, DFA Clement and Fryer

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced a few moves this afternoon. The team claimed right-hander Chad Beck off waivers from Toronto, and catcher Ali Solis off waivers from San Diego. To make room on the 40-man roster, they designated Jeff Clement and Eric Fryer for assignment. Beck, who turns 28 in January, has just 18 innings in the majors, with a 5.50 ERA, a 6.0 K/9, and a 2.5 BB/9 ratio...

Grading the Pirates’ 2008 Draft

Back in January I took a look at the early results of the 2008 draft. At the time, only eight players from the entire draft had a career 2.0 WAR or better. I pointed out that the 2012 season should start to see results from this draft, especially for the Pirates, who had some poor results heading in to the year. Pedro Alvarez managed to turn things around, and the club traded Robbie...

Waldron threw 23 pitches, with 13 strikes.

Pirates claim Chad Beck and Ali Solis

The Pirates claimed pitcher Chad Beck and catcher Ali Solis off waivers on Thursday. Jeff Clement and Eric Fryer were designated for assignment to make room for Beck and Solis on the 40-man roster. Obviously, these are pretty minuscule moves in the grand scheme of things, but I’ll briefly break them down anyway. Beck is a 27 year old reliever that was recently DFA by the Blue...

Arizona Fall League Recap: 10/25

The Scottsdale Scorpions won 6-3 today. Here are the results from the Pirates prospects. **Matt Curry went 0-for-3 with a walk. **Brandon Cumpton pitched a shutout inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. Cumpton threw 16 pitches with eight strikes.

Weighing Interest

The World Series starts tomorrow night, and the Pirates are not in it. To be honest, this is the least interest I have had in the baseball playoffs in years. There's no doubt in my mind that the Pirates collapse had everything to do with that. I haven't been writing on here or tweeting about baseball since August, and I'm sure nobody has really missed either of those...

Roundtable with Dejan Kovacevic this Evening

This evening at 9 PM, Dejan Kovacevic will meet and discuss the whole Navy SEALS training thing that went on during Pirates Fall Instructs. Hopefully it will provide some clarity on the whole situation, especially what was released late last night [link]. The forum will take place at Bucs Dugout [link]. Please follow Charlie’s rules listed on the page.
