NASCAR has reinstated driver A.J. Allmendinger, who was suspended July 24 for failing a drug test.

Allmendinger, 30, was reinstated on Tuesday after he completed NASCAR's substance abuse "road to recovery" rehabilitation program.

Allmendinger is without a car after losing his Penske Racing No. 22 Dodge in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series for the failed drug test.

Penske Racing announced the firing of Allmendinger after he was suspended by NASCAR in this statement:

"Penske Racing fully supports NASCAR's substance abuse policy, and we are disappointed with AJ's positive drug test results," Roger Penske said. "AJ is a terrific driver, a good person and it is very unfortunate that we have to separate at this time. We have invested greatly in AJ and we were confident in his success with our team. The decision to dismiss him is consistent with how we would treat any other Penske Racing team member under similar circumstances. As AJ begins NASCAR's Road to Recovery program, we wish him the best and look forward to seeing him compete again in NASCAR."

But Allmendinger was seen at the IndyCar race Sunday at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana with Penske Racing owner Roger Penske, who also owns an IncdyCar team.

Asked if Penske would be willing to rehire Allmendinger, Penske replied: "He could be an option for us, for sure."

"I thought it would be good for him to get out, see people here, talk to some of the team owners," Penske said. "He's certainly an option for people on the NASCAR side and also on the Indy side."
