When Andy Pettitte announced his retirement back in Febuary of 2011, many did not believe that he was really done. And he wasn't as he signed a one-year $2.5mm deal with the Yankees about a year later. When he finally reached the Majors in May, Pettitte became a reliable arm going 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA in 12 starts for New York. He also suffered a fractured left fibula missing a portion of the season but returned again pitching well. Pettitte still has the ability to compete as he will take the ball in game 2 against the Orioles in the ALDS but does he want to continue to be away from his family is the question. Mark Hale of the New York Post notes that Pettitte made comments that would suggest this playoff run may not be his last. “I know one thing: I know the competition and the desire to compete is still there, and I don’t feel like I kind of got that itch out from the 70 innings or so that I threw this year,” Pettitte said. “It’s going to be a situation where you, again, just need to go home, see if I want to do this again.” The fact that Pettitte returned from a year off and posted a sub 3.00 ERA shows that he still has the ability to compete at the highest level. One scenario that I see that will have Pettitte retiring is if New York wins it all, but then again he may want to return for one last run.
