Glowing stories written about dynamic Los Angeles Angels rookie Mike Trout this summer often referred to his potential to become one of the youngest batting champions -- and MVPs -- in baseball history as almost a fait accompli. That has decidedly changed as baseball enters its final month. Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera has caught Trout for the AL lead in batting average (.330134 to .329764 through Thursday) and is gathering support as the AL MVP by hitting .360 since the start of August. Trout, on the other hand, has been more human than the "SuperNatural" billing he received on a recent Sports Illustrated cover. "The bar was set so high that we're talking about a month where he hit .290 as a lull," Angels general manager Jerry Dipoto said of Trout's August, in which he batted .284 -- by far his lowest mark for a full month in the big leagues. "If his accomplishments to date have created a standard where simply being really good ...

Callaspo lifts Angels over Tigers

Alberto Callaspo's teammates chased him from first base into left field while fireworks exploded above Angel Stadium, smacking the pinch-hitting hero on his back until he was sore. ''I was hurt,'' Callaspo said with a grin. ''That's OK. I'd take 20 like that.'' The Los Angeles Angels are getting pretty good at celebrations during a 13...

Game 2012.137: Tigers at Angels

Detroit Tigers, 73-63, 2nd place, 1 back, WC 6th place. Every game counts. Don’t blame me for that, that’s the official Tigers.com slogan.  A lot of us were saying that back in May, but they didn’t seem to count as much back then, at least officially. Anyway, let us not detract from the matter at hand, which is:  Battle of the MVPs! Tonight Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit...

Scherzer, Tigers outdone by Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Pinch-hitter Alberto Callaspo drove home pinch-runner Peter Bourjos with a two-out single in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2 Friday night for their ninth win in 10 games. Kendrys Morales had a triple, a double and a one-out single that started the ninth-inning rally for the Angels, who have won 13 of 16 overall to...

Tribe can't complete sweep vs. Tigers

DETROIT (AP) -- Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Prince Fielder added a solo shot in the eighth to help the Detroit Tigers avoid a three-game sweep with a 7-1 victory Wednesday night over the Cleveland Indians. Detroit's Doug Fister (8-8) allowed a run and four hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Ubaldo Jimenez (9-15) gave up four...

Game 2012.136: Indians at Tigers

Detroit Tigers, 72-63, 2nd place, 1 back, WC not gonna happen. Well, that’s baseball.  And you’ve got to tip your hat to Cy Masterson. Etc. Etc. See what happens when you don’t have a plan? Hopefully Kevin will use the day off tomorrow to devise something good. Or maybe we should all use the time to work on our lineup submissions. For his part, Jim Leyland had an explanation...

Justin Verlander Is Really Good

Since the start of the 2009 season, there have been only two players to post a WAR that is greater than or equal to 25.  One of these players, as I’m sure you suspected, is Albert Pujols, who was right on the line with an even 25.  The other player, coming in at 27.4 wins above replacement, is Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander.  Verlander is not only first on the list, but...

Tigers looking into Elvis Andrus for 2013?

Despite what happens for the Tigers the rest of the season, general manager Dave Dombrowski will probably decline the club option on shortstop Jhonny Peralta and look to upgrade the position. The importance of the position too could be an area that Dombrowski makes a huge splash with considering his track record in previous offseasons with the team. The question though is who could...

A's McCarthy hit by line drive in head vs. Angels

Brandon McCarthy has left in the fourth inning against the Los Angeles Angels after a hard line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar hit Oakland's opening-day starter in the head. McCarthy had almost no time to react when Aybar lined his 91 mph cutter back Wednesday. The ball bounced off the right side of McCarthy's head, knocking the A's pitcher down. He also landed on...

Detroit Tigers Offense Lacks Pop to Support Scherzer’s Strong Outing in Loss

Max Scherzer continued to show the American League why he deservers to be in the Cy Young conversation, even though the Detroit Tigers’ offense did not show the baseball world why this team deserve to be in the playoffs, falling … Continue reading →

9/5 Game Recap: Indians 1 - Tigers 7

Player of the Game Michael Brantley edged out Jason Kipnis by 0.01 points to take tonight's player of the game with an RBI single and a score of 1.38. Kipnis had two singles and a run scored. This was the lowest winning Player of the Game score since Jeremy Accardo scored 1.03 points for an inning of scoreless relief on July 19th. Feathers Up Ubaldo Jimenez had his best...

Game 2012.138: Tigers at Angels

Normally, a Verlander start would be all about Verlander.  But recently, the Tigers have fallen into a funk where sharp starting efforts have been undone by an inability to score runs on offense.  Last night after a brief bit of trouble in the first (exacerbated by Cabrera’s failure to turn a DP), Max Scherzer settled down and had one of his best outings of the season. After...

Game Recap 9/8/12 -- A Little PMA, A Little MVP -- Angels 6 Tigers 1

I'm trying to type this as fast as I can so I can process what is going on with this team. After they got swept by the Rays and sleptwalked through the end of August, most people (myself included) gave up on this team for dead. Too many games back and too many teams to overcome to get into the playoffs. Then they beat up on the Red Sox, them 2 out of 3 from the Mariners (including...
