When the Avalanche played at Boston on Oct. 10 former Colorado defenseman Ray Bourque gave players a suggestion for its slogan this season: "Why not us?" Avalanche players seem to be buying into that one a little more with each passing and unexpected victory such as Monday night's 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at Consol Energy Center. An 8-1 start to the season and second-most points in the league? "Why not us?" A shutout of a Penguins team for the first time at Consol in a game in which Sidney Crosby played? "Why not us?" A second shutout in his third start for a 36-year-old backup goalie against two Eastern powers Boston and Pittsburgh? "Why not?" said J.S. Giguere. Well actually Giguere fessed up after the latest Avs win before a sellout crowd at Consol. "I think we would have been a little surprised to be honest with you" Giguere said when asked what he would have said if someone had asked him whether his team would have this record to start out. "But we knew we had a better team and were excited for the season." The Avalanche got its latest victory despite being outshot 34-14 by the Penguins. That was just the total for shots that hit the net. Otherwise Pittsburgh had a whopping 72-29 edge in shots attempted. But the only puck that went into the net all night came at the 5:26 mark of the second period when captain Gabe Landeskog came out of the box after serving a penalty took a lead pass from defenseman Ryan Wilson and used Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik as a screen in beating Marc-Andre Fleury from about 30 feet. "It's tough to beat any goalie in this league when shooting from the outside so I was just trying to get a step to the inside and get one off quick and I did" Landeskog said. "It was lucky it went in. It obviously wasn't the start we wanted in this building but we tried to stick with our game plan and our penalty killing has been one of the best parts of our season. But your goalie has to be your best penalty killer and he sure was tonight."
