An underlying theme throughout training camp and the preseason has been if the Bengals would be able to agree to an extension with Geno Atkins. With the regular season set to begin on Sunday in Chicago both sides have agreed to a deal according to a league source.
The five year $55 million deal would be second among defensive tackles in terms of average per year at $11 million per season. Atkins is a two-time Pro Bowl player who set a team record for sacks last season with 12.5.
Atkins was scheduled to earn $1.4 this season but will now make $22 million in the first six months of the new deal. There is $36 million in new money over the first three years of the extension.

After signing DE Carlos Dunlap to an extension and using the franchise tag on DE Michael Johnson, the possibility of the Bengals reaching an agreement with Atkins greatly improved.
