Rookie camp is over for the newest Buffalo Bills. Tomorrow, most of the players will be introduced to their other teammates as organized team activity will begin for the team. Before going any further into camp, we here at Queen City Sports would like to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. Without any further ado, here are some notes of the last day of Bills Rookie Camp! E.J. Manuel again received the majority of snaps at QB. Manuel had 27 snaps on Sunday and completed 13 of 26 attempts per the Bills’ official site. At one point, Manuel threw back-to-back interceptions. Both interceptions were made by undrafted free agents. Jumal Williams intercepted Manuel’s first pass. On the next play, Manuel bobbled the snap and quickly tried to get the ball out. Cornerback Nickell Robey intercepted the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Robey, the former USC Trojan, also intercepted a Manuel pass for a touchdown the day before. Brandon Kaufman continued to impress at rookie camp. He reminds me a bit of David Nelson. He’s a possession receiver and a guy who seems to be able to find open spots in the field. Defensive backs spent a good portion of practice working on fundamentals. After Manuel’s second interception, the entire offense had to do “up-downs” as punishment. Nice to see a consequence for turnovers. Rookie Camp MVP: Robert Woods Woods showed off his outstanding route running ability over the course of the Bills’ three-day rookie camp. Buddy Nix had mentioned moving Stevie Johnson into the slot, but if I’m Buffalo, I put Woods there. Woods also exhibited the best hands at camp. He caught a few lasers from Manuel that other receivers had trouble handling. There is no doubt in my mind that he’ll be a day one starter in Buffalo. Honorable Mentions: Brandon Kaufman and Nickell Robey Both UDFA made an impression at rookie camp. Kaufman made several nice catches, including a one handed catch on the first night of practice. As previously mentioned, he had the ability to be a solid possession receiver. Buffalo suddenly has an influx of talent at the wide receiver position, so he’ll have to continue to impress. Robey had interceptions in two of the practices and returned both for touchdowns. Robey played outside at USC, but was primarily used in the slot over the three days. Due to his lack of size, this is probably the best fit for Robey. There is a good chance of Robey making the team this year as long as he continues to play at a high level. Final Thoughts There’s no doubt in my mind that Buffalo wants Manuel to win the quarterback battle in training camp, but it won’t be easy. There’s plenty to like about Manuel’s game, but he is very unpolished. Kevin Kolb and Tarvaris Jackson will get their opportunities. I haven’t given Jackson much of a chance, but the best quarterback in training camp will be under center when the Bills play the Patriots. As for the defense, I cannot wait to see what Mike Pettine has in store for the team. His aggressive style is going to be a refreshing change over what Bills fans have dealt with over the last few seasons. One rookie who will benefit from Pettine’s defense is Kiko Alonso. Alonso was the most consistent player on Oregon’s defense and he’ll be an immediate starter and contributor for the Bills. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the running for defensive rookie of the year. Last, Buffalo needs to reach an agreement with Jairus Byrd. He’s a leader on defense and the team needs to make signing him long-term a priority. Byrd is another player who should thrive in Pettine’s defense. Pettine’s schemes will cause opposing quarterbacks to rush some passes and a ball-hawk like Byrd would benefit greatly. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him match his interception total from his rookie season in 2013. The post Bills Rookie Camp: Day Three Notes appeared first on Queen City Sports.

Admitting the raw rookie needs work on his ‘footwork and mechanics,’ Bills coach Doug Marrone should have E.J. Manuel hold a clipboard this autumn

Noting the raw rookie needs work on his “footwork and mechanics,” Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone seemed to acknowledge E.J. Manuel is nowhere near ready to start as an NFL quarterback. As the 2013 Senior Bowl MVP and a 2012 second team All-ACC selection, Buffalo took the 23-year-old Manuel out of Florida State with the 16th pick in last month’s draft. Although brimming...
